Just thought I’d post some positive news about a Bluetec with higher miles on it. I just had a pretty in-depth service completed and here are what the tech had to say. Your SUV is in great shape, period. I pretty much gave him a blank check and turned him loose. The SUV has around 230,000 miles on it.
- Transmission service, he said he is used to seeing a bunch of clutch material and a little metal in the pan and this one was surprisingly clean.
- Replaced engine mounts & transmission mount, very much needed.
- Cleaned the crust out of the DEF injector connection, wasn’t as bad as he had seen on other SUV’s. (I did it 100k miles back)
- Got around 480 miles between regen’s with the average being 370’ish miles (IIRC AEM was completed about 80-90k miles ago).
- Average fuel economy is showing 27.1 over the last 20k miles.
- Over the last 15k’ish miles I have replaced 100% of the suspension wearables (air bags & struts included) replaced the transfer case chain, all wheel bearings (one rear one was making noise), new tires and always do standard services at 5-6k miles.
I feel like this 2013 GL350 rides just like it did when it was new. I realize that much of the stuff that I have done is sort of “over the top” maintenance but it is so much better than spending $50-60k on a replacement. Even the fuel trims are crazy good (see pic). Now the secret, this car spends 80% or more time on the interstate & I do not turn it off if it’s in a regen. At this point if the engine puked I would probably put a reman in it, still much cheaper than a replacement. My biggest worry is that MB will stop supplying parts, hopefully the good aftermarket companies will continue to offer parts for the foreseeable future.
Hey I even added an GTA Apple CarPlay unit. I highly suggest that upgrade, works great!!
I do believe you've nailed the key to keeping this engine in good shape: Letting it run for a while, not turning it off in a regen, and not using it as a grocery getter.
I'm at 112k miles on my 2016 gl350 with Designo. Despite potential expensive repairs, the family still love it very much.
Recently I swapped to x164's 18 inch rim to get some off-road tires for adventures. The Cooper AT3 mild off-road tire ride surprisingly smooth and quiet, noticeably more comfortable compared to 19inch before. Bluetec x166 with 350mm brake will fit 18inch factory rim (the 375mm brake that comes with AMG appearance package will not)
