What are the functions of the rear view mirror?

What are the functions of the rear view mirror?
I have the factory rearview mirror with the garage buttons. It is pretty thick, 2" or so. Wondering why it is so thick - I assume it is auto-dimming and has the garage buttons. Does it do anything else?
I was looking to install one of those rearview mirror+dashcam things that clip on to the existing mirror, and thought it might end up too thick. It is harder to find one of those that attach to whatever the existing mirror attaches to, but it would look clearer. Unless the factory one has some other function?
