For those of you who need a replacement engine on the budget - here is a short block with seems like original stock cast iron sleeves i just saw on eBay - basically you can just clean it up and drop it in your dead car. Sale has nothing to do with me, just scrolling around. Ask seller to provide more pics of bores and if you lucky you would have long lasting engine

I'm no pro on these engines but are those twin longitudinal lines in one of the cylinders (#4?) the first sign of scoring?

I don’t see sleeves on that engine.
I have read that some later M278’s have iron sleeves, but have yet to see one. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist….
Below is a properly sleeved M278. You can clearly see the different metals, Aluminum and iron.
I could be wrong but, looking at the engine in that listing above, It appears to have aluminum bores.

Good Luck!

Agree. The ebay listed engine doesn't look sleeved. A scratch can be seen on one of the cylinder head lands. Looks all-aluminum.

Those are original cast iron sleeves from factory
Tiny vertical scratches from carbon buildup.
I am not affiliated with seller, i am just telling you this is original m278 block with old style cast iron barrels
The rest is up to you - want to buy - buy, don't want to buy - don't buy

Fact, that the engine is presented with dirt on the cylinders and poor pictures would be red flag for me.
