Truck starts up issue
Truck starts fine cold, ill run it for 20 min or take it for a drive. Afterward ill turn it off, will not start up. Starter Clicks, I replaced starter in may. Local mechanic is telling me it's not the battery or starter its the timing chain been stretch.
I'm hesitant to either put in another motor. Or could it be just the starter.
Please help. 2 mechanic saying motor timing chain. Want to replace engine, asking on thoughts could it be just a starter I just don't want to be putting part after part and go down that direction.

Sounds to me like the ECU losing signal to the crankshaft position. Taking the GL450 to a mechanic with Xentry or another Mercedes diagnostic to pull the codes would identify the cause.
At this point it sounds electronic, bad SAM, ECU, or heck a crank position sensor. Good luck.
how many miles on the vehicle?
number of months since main battery was last replaced? Avg life around 30-40 months, depending upon many variables of course.
If you don’t have access to a scanner or don’t want to/can’t fiddle with this for whatever reason, for $200 replace battery first, though starting cold (depending on outside air temp) seems to indicate otherwise. That said, if outside air temp not real cold, these large batteries tend to recover and make us chase our tail when it’s a simple battery replacement.
I was in the same place not too long ago.
