glitter in oil for 140k mile M278 in 2013 GL450

Just got the expected but sad phone call from the mechanic that there's "glitter" in the oil of my 140k mile 2013 GL450. It recently started knocking so I had feared the worst. I've also got some typical bore scoring in the cylinders, and increasingly high oil consumption, like a quart every couple hundred miles or so with more than normal smoke out the exhaust. Engine still feels like full power and no codes, no miss or compression loss yet. The end is near, though, as it doesn't make financial sense to replace the engine and I get really nervous driving it with a knock even if it might last a few thousand miles more. I don't know what I'm buying next, I need to figure out my budget first as the GL was paid for and I wasn't expecting a big car payment this year. Maybe I'll buy an older X164, but I don't think I'll buy another X166 and I can't afford a GLS.
I spent a LOT of time on this forum the last 5 years since I bought it with 82k miles. Thank you all for all the content on here, it helped me tremendously as I DIY almost everything. I'm upset about the whole thing, I get emotionally attached to my cars, a lot of my blood sweat and tears went into this GL450, and a lot of fun memories made with family vacations. 5 years and 60k miles was too short, I thought I was going to get a few more years out of it.

Sorry, this sucks. I am in a similar situation - while no glitter in oil yet, at 210K miles I don't trust the gl to transport my daughter to college and back (NC to NH, 14 hours each way). Even driving with my wife and two dogs to the beach, which is 3 hours away - wouldn't be fun to get stranded half way somewhere.

So, taking advantage of Nissan's unpopularity here, I bought a 2023 Armada with 30K miles on it. Cost me $35K out the door. Does everything I need it to do, large with plenty of space, adequate power and decent comfort on the long trips, and it drives nicely on the beach, even in dry soft sand.

Still keeping the GL, driving it around town, but once the engine goes - I don't think I'll be putting money into the new engine

I decided to sell it separately from a trade-in, so I got some quotes and am going to have a car-buying company come buy it tonight. Thus ends my X166 experience. I'm leaning heavily towards a 2010-2012 X164 GL450, but am also looking at Yukons or Escalades with the 6.2L and Sequoias with the 5.7L It's basically the same decision tree I went though 5 years ago, just with a lower price bracket (around $10k). If I end up with the X164 then I'll be active in that forum, but if not I have a 08 E350, and I hope to someday be able to afford a newer GLS so I'll still be around these forums.

Have a look at an X166 GLS450 with the reliable M276 3.0TTV6.

This. They are fantastic engines that get some pretty good mileage for a heavy SUV. I would stay away from the X164 unless you live in a climate with no rain as they leak badly.

If you don't mind sharing - what quotes did you get? I looked ar carmax and carvana and got quotes in the neighborhood of $2-3K for my 2013 GL with 208K miles
