Airmatic

I rebuilt the airmatic suspensions on my 2007 and 2012 GL450s so I m having a shop diagnos it right now but I am pretty sure I need to replace the compressor, valve block and both rear air bags with only Arnott parts BUT at age 82 I may not be up to the task.
airmatic is a wonderful suspension when it’s working correctly but a giant PIA when it’s not.
I do love everything thing else about this 2019 GLS450 which I have owned for about a week.
couldn’t stand my 2021 Audi Q7, terribly harsh ride, very poor ergonomics, etc., etc!
My wife loves her 2013 Q5!

My money is on the valve block. If the front is inflated the compressor is still working. The air block is relatively inexpensive in the whole scheme of things.
Find the part number then search Amazon. You'll find a dozen or more ranging in price. Pick you poison and roll the dice. The original only lasted this long, why pay the money.

Valve block

I’m thinking the compressor is not working because when I press the “raise vehicle” button in the center consul the message on the instrument panel says “vehicle rising” but nothing happens and I can’t hear the compressor running. I checked the Airmatic fuse and it is good.
You may be correct and depending on what the shop that is diagnosing now says I may try to DIY as I have done several times before on previous GL450s.
One thing I did learn from prior endeavors is that the elcheapo valve blocks on Amazon are useless even though they look identical to the good ones.
I talked with customer service at Arnott and they would recommend ONLY the slightly higher priced of their two valve blocks which can be ordered from Rockauto. About $300, if I remember correctly! I just checked Amazon and the only one I found is $95…DONT GO THERE… a giant headache.
Arnott VB3283 is the one you want just confirmed by an Arnott technician.
call Arnott for their recommendation and then order from Rockauto!

Diagnosis

Two rear airbags and a new compressor. They feel that the valve block is ok. $4600 is tough to swallow for a DIYer like me BUT my wife is not comfortable with her 82 year old husband crawling around under the car.
This shop seems very competent and they have a good reputation so, we’ll see and hope for the best.
I really think I got a cream puff of a 2019 GLS450 with 62k on the clock. I bought my 2007 and 2012 GLs with 100k and put an additional 100k on each of them with only airmatic problems which I fixed.
I do love these MBs.

I don't know about a 2019 but the rear air bags on my 2014 are so stupid easy to replace you might want to find another repair shop $4,000 seem like an aweful lot. But you do you, I'll do me.

Air suspenion is really simple. An air compressor fills an air reservoir. The reason for a reservoir is simply that the air compressor can not compress enough air quick enough. Electric switches (leveling switches) at each wheel measure the vehicle height and send a signal to the valve block to either releive air or add air to each wheel. Manually raising the vehicle via the switch will tell the valve block to send more air from the reservoir. If it is not working properly, you may get a light on the dash saying raising but not sending air to the air springs. I too assumed it was the compressor as everyone else said so. I too have a perfectly good compressor sitting in a box that wasn't needed.

I'm not there, I can't lay eyes on them, but I really doubt you need to replace both air bags at only 61,000 miles. At the very least get another opinion before spending $4,000

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Air bags

Thanks for your reply.
Over and done with. It was spendy for sure but all seems good now. If I had done it myself I would have installed a new Arnott VB3823 valve body along with an Arnott compressor and a pair of Biltstein or Arnott rear airbags and still saved about $3k BUT that is history now.
The technician said no need to replace the valve body and one of the airbags was completely shot, probably because I drove around with the rear suspension completely collapsed for a couple of days, and removing it was very difficult, i.e. thought he was going to have to cut it in half to remove it!
Again, tough to swallow for a devout DIYer, but it’s over for now.
Next step: replace, or turn, the rear rotors and install new pads (10 mm left on old ones) and an engine and cabin air filter.
