What is going on? Did MB think the GLA45 would poach sales of the new GLC43? Any thoughts?

No idea. You'd think the CLA 45 would die before the GLA 45 since we americans love SUVs!

I like mine, but Americans aren’t loving the GLA. 2023 sales were dismal and 1st half 2024 is worse.

It’s selling in the same category as Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4. Buyers don’t see it as different enough to consider it a BMW X2 competitor. GLB resale values are holding up but GLA loses ½ new price in 2 years.

Even in these forums it’s being criticized, right or wrong, as “not a real Mercedes” and “Nissan with MB badging.” We had to put a Santa Fe in the family fleet (10 vehicles) after our ‘21 user said, “disappointed, unreliable, would not buy again.”

The MB GLA competes against the BMW X1 not the larger BMW X2. The Santa Fe, CRV and RAV 4 are all bigger vehicles and compete against the MB GLC, not the MB GLA.

You’re right about the Hyundai, we bought a Tucson, not a Santa Fe. We buy by 2 main criteria, size because we have limited space to put them but need seating and cargo space & price because we have 10 of them. When we spec’d out the small 5 passenger ones to replace a Cadillac ATS, the GLA, X2, RAV4, CRV, and Tucson all fell into the same size box. Tucson was below the price box, so we’ll see how it holds up.

But all that aside, the reality is that MB is selling less than 1000 GLAs a month in the US market.

FYI the MB GLA competes against the BMW X1 NOT the BMW X2. Hyundais are notorious for engine fires and for missing important anti-theft features.

Thanks. We did the price out with the help of the dealers. The MB and the BMW were the same dealer, so that’s where we landed. The Hyundai was a bit of a late push based on extremely negative input from the GLA driver. We were aware of the security issues but downplayed that because of semi-rural use. Looking up details of engine fires.

Be aware that there are insurance companies who won't insure Hyundais because of the lack of anti-theft technology. I made the mistake of buying a 2004 Hyundai Accent hatchback brand new. It was the worst car I ever owned.

Don’t take my comments the wrong way. I was originally trying to offer an explanation of why the GLA model line was shrinking in the U.S.

I really like my GLA and so far it’s been very reliable. If it’s the right car for the purpose, I’d recommend one again. The GLB and GT drivers are very happy.

But even though I put the other GLA driver in the car, I don’t make the decisions alone and she hates the car. I would get her out of it, but the resale/trade-in is so bad, it’s too far upside down right now.
