Blow off valve

Been reading about installing a blow off valve because the stock design uses a blank plate and not releasing the pressure is bad on the turbo.

1.why would an oem hand build an engine that is designed for failure according to how others view the blank plate?
2. is a blow off valve going to increase the life of the turbo , stock or with minor mods, etc. piggy back tune..
3.if a blow off valve is suggested, what brands are the best bang for money?

hoping to hear some thoughts.looking to lightly mod my 2015 with piggy back tune..

Thanks yall

Typically either a recycle system (not actually blanked off) or blowoff type design scheme. Some people like the sound of a blowoff, some don't.

yeah i get its either recirculated or blow off style. aside from the sound, i guess i am asking who can confirm the 2015 gla is blanked or recirculated. if truly blanked off, is the turbo getting compressor surge, hence people saying to get a bov

I did some research on this as well and there are different type of systems where a blowoff valve is needed and other systems like Mercedes where it is recirculated and not needed nor damages the turbo. For the MB the best thing to do is get a variable valve using the same tech currently on the car -- link here GFB DV+ but just look around for the best place to buy. Got mine brand new on ebay for only $110 shipped :woowoo:

EDIT: @Kulle I see your profile has the AMG so would be pushing more boost and is a different setup than the "baby" GLA lol
Perhaps one of these from TurboSmart GLA45 AMG 2014-current would work for you but hope someone that did it can chime in on what they did and performance differences.

Yeah thats the one i was looking at. Wanted to hear from someone with same AMG model and if they used the plumback(recirc) or the 50/50 vent, which i want to know causes a richer run, since the MAF will calc fuel based on amount of air, and if some vents to atmosphere, would be rich and cause issues. i had a wrx and ran without the recirc to hear the sound and it would stall.

I have a 2019 AMG45 and the TurboSmart one will not work. Well, not easily anyway. My 45 has an electric diverter.

All of the GLA are electric diverters just different styles between the AMG and non.

Turbosmart has 2 models for the AMG (VR2) that are plug and play replacing the stock one with theirs.

Right you are. I ordered the electric version along with the OE tune.

do you have any review/opinions on the diverter and tune?

Not yet. Still waiting on the DV and my tune just came back from OE this morning. I will update after installation.

Ok, so the new electric DV and OE tune are installed. The tune is nice in the mid range, shifts are firm and quick. No change in the exhaust sound. With the DV there is a prominent hiss when I chop back the throttle. Also I notice less engine breaking. That's probably a good thing.

Just got the Turbosmart Dual Port Part Number TS-0223-1066 installed with a K&N Panel Filter with the aim of getting it tuned on the Dyno in the next year.
The car now has a very noticeable Turbo intake noise when on the power and a loud whoosh when backing off. It adds a lot of theatre to every drive. hiss bang hisss whoosh crackle pop Ha ha
I have retained the AMG performance exhaust as stock as I was advised not a lot of performance gains for the money when replacing.
