10 Great Facts About Mercedes-Benz

  1. The modern automobile was invented by Karl Benz, with his patent of the “Motorwagen” in 1886. His wife funded his work.
  2. Her name was Bertha Ringer Benz, and she took the first road trip in a modern car – 130 miles round trip with her sons.
  3. Karl Benz had the first ever driver’s license!
  4. The first car in the country of Nepal was a Mercedes-Benz, given to its king in 1940.
  5. The logo of the company represents air, land, and water. The company thought about adding a fourth point to the star to represent space, but decided not to.
  6. Pope Benedict XVI’s Popemobile (yes, that’s the real name) was a Mercedes-Benz.
  7. The “Mercedes” part of Mercedes-Benz was named after Emil Jellinek’s daughter Mercedes in 1901. Jellinek was an automobile entrepreneur at the time who worked with the company.
  8. Mercedes-Benz vehicles are manufactured in 30 countries around the world.
  9. Not only do Mercedes-Benz vehicles help us get around in the day-to-day, but they also feature on racetracks around the world as high-performance race cars.
  10. Mercedes-Benz vehicles were the first to have brakes on all four wheels, beginning in 1924. Safe!

The famous mid 70s through 80s servo actuated air conditioning system (AAC II) was designed and used by Chrysler as the Auto Temp II system. When Chrysler replaced it with a newer design they sold it to Mercedes.

Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz never met. The companies were merged post-war.

When Bertha Benz made her road trip she experienced several breakdowns which she had to repair on her own. It led to a few changes in future cars.
