This is not a malfunction, unless it's accompanied by a message saying "Currently Unavailable". On newer models, this icon is a visual representation of your blind spot sensors. Green indicates they are working and no car is in your blind spot. Grey means they are not working and red means there's a car in your blind spot. Now that I'm thinking about it, this icon may only show up if DISTRONIC and Active Steering are active. I've seen it in loaners, but haven't really paid attention to when it shows up.

Just parked our GLB250 after a 20 mile round trip. That icon isn’t there in ours, no green, gray, or red. But we don’t have Distronic, only lane change and forward collision warning, so I may have posted too soon.
I have seen the bottom icon to the upper left of the right hand gauge and it definitely means FCW is not available even when no words are shown.
