Mercedes seems to have done better in the reliability. Look at this 2015 Dependability ratings: Mercedes is better than Audi and BMW.

I've had 6 or 7 BMW's and I can't remember a single issue I had with any of them so if I did, they were minor and had it addressed at the next service interval. Actually, outside of the one Lexus I had, I've been very fortunate to have had very few issues with any of the vehicles I've owned though I've rarely kept one over 3 years in since about 2001 when I started leasing instead of buying.

My only (and I mean ONLY as in never again) BMW was a 2007 335i Hardtop Convertible. It was not a good experience. The engine had to have turbos replaced and there so many niggles it was constantly at the dealership for service. Sorry, but I was not a happy BMW owner. And we had two at the same time. Both were issue laden cars.

If you don't keep vehicles over 3 years, then you cannot say you didn't have any issues with them. 3 or 4 year old vehicles shouldn't have any problems at all! This doesn't help the idea that you should "only lease German vehicles and not buy them."

Sure I can say I didn't have any issues with them, because I didn't. I didn't say how they held up after that period because I have no idea. I leased the Lexus and had all kinds of issues in the first 2 years I had it.
There are different kinds of quality...build quality can certainly be determined in the first 3 years of ownership. Longevity and durability are different measure.

Understood. But this thread is about reliability and longevity. We all already know German vehicles have good build quality. It's mainly the reliability of all the parts and in combination of each other, that have been questionable for German cars. A modern German car should be able to run to 200k without major parts or components giving trouble.

The link I posted above seems like Mercedes and Porsche have made some gains.

I get it. A lot of people lease so my experience would be representative of those in the leasing crowd. FWIW, I have 2 friends with MC C-class cars, both with over 100K and AFAIK, they have had no major issues with them. It's one of the reasons I jumped from BMW although to be fair, no one I know with a BMW has had major issues but one and that was part of a recall.
OTOH, my 2 friends with Porsche's (one Cayman, one Boxster) each have had a lot of problems with theirs but are too blinded by the shiny to consider anything else. The one with that had the Cayman now has a GT3 and something big went wrong with it recently. I don't recall exactly, but it had something to do with bearings in the engine and is a somewhat common problem with them.
