Have my GLC a little over a month now, recently heard the brakes squeeking when in reverse. A colleague of mine had a similar problem with his C-class w205 and eventually got the dealership to change the rotors - no real reason why it was squeeking, but problem went away with new rotors

Any comments ?

Yes. The squealing brakes are very embarrassing & very loud.

I found this thread. I have the same issue. Cold weather seems to be the culprit? :

Ours had some noise occasionally when put into reverse during first few weeks of ownership. It has just over 1300 miles and now its quiet

Squealing brakes are not uncommon on BMWs either. Common thought is that Germans are more concerned with how well your car stops than what it sounds like when doing so.

I have the same issue but again when it was very cold overnight. It seems that it is getting better now that the weather is a little warmer.

I have had multiple BMW's and have had no squeaking brakes and multiple Mercedes too with no squeaking brakes. These are so loud in reverse Mercedes should be embarrassed. I know my wife is when backing up.

Hopefully, it is same problem that some of the C classes have and will be an easy fix.

They may be using a brake compound that reduces brake dust. I seem to recall seeing something about this a while back and how they were more prone to squeaking. I'll put up with the squeaking if I don't have to deal with the brake dust. It was horrible on my X6.

Just a thought. Have you noticed that after washing your car you see a "flash rust" appearing on the rotors? The first few times I washed the GLC I saw no such rust film forming. Now I do, which tells me the protective coating used on the new rotors to inhibit rust during transit overseas, etc. has completely worn off. Is this coating somehow contributing to the squeaking? I did have minor squeaks while backing before, but not now.

Is this the first car you ever owned? How could their possibly be a coating on the part of the rotor thats swept by the pads?

Flash rusting of the swept rotor surface is normal on any car with iron rotors.

Actually, the GLC is my 13th Mercedes -- bought my first one in 1968. Of course, flash rusting is normal; that's not the point. The reason my GLC had shiny rotors when delivered to me is that the rotors were coated with a rust preventative while the car was in transit overseas and parked at the port and dealer for days. The brake pads remove the coating over time. The question is how much time. This type of rotor coating is very common -- especially in Germany -- obviously, you are unaware of it.

I would think the coating would wear off very quickly.

Possibly, but some say hundreds of miles. My experience seems to validate that. Of course, depending on stop/go cycles.

I'm actually very familiar with the coating from the 6 brake jobs I've done on my last BMW,

Its primary intention is not for rust protection during transit but permanent rust protection during the life of the rotor.

The entire rotor is coated and the pad sweeps off the friction surface area leaving no unswept areas exposed to rusting.

This coating typically wears very quickly and shouldn't have any effect on noise as almost every original equipment rotor from BMW/MB/Audi have this coating.

Some aftermarket rotors like Zimmerman's have a similar but much thicker coating that does take several 100's of miles to wear down completely on the swept areas.

This manufacturer addresses the noise issue, so who knows:

Anyone else still having wind noise complains? I took our GLC to the dealership yesterday to troubleshoot dash noise and also have the wheels balanced. I was given a 2015 Q4 build loaner W205 with AMG package. The first thing I did was look for acoustic glass on the front windows, nada, not available. Then I took it to the highway for a spin, the wind noise was just as bad or worse than our GLC So it seems there is nothing wrong with the GLC wind noise

I also noticed the W205 came with a set of digital driving display showing HP, torque, etc on the Command screen. Anyone seen this display on their GLC?

My GlC brakes stopped squeaking in reverse around 1,000 miles as well. For me – and I suppose others here -- there seemed to be a correlation between the complete wearing off of the rotor coating and rotor noise. But, as noted above, there is some disagreement here. However, the disagreeing party did note that some “aftermarket” coatings last hundreds of miles before wear-off. Since we don’t know exactly what type of rotor coating Mercedes uses – somewhere between first swipe clean-off and, say, 100 miles – it’s logical to deduce that the coating plays a role in the temporary noise problem. On one of my previous new Mercedes that had noise as well, I was told by a mechanic that about 30 minutes of actual brake use should remove the coating. After all, this type of coating is a hard metallic material.

The pads are also wearing in and the materials used in the pad compounds today are pretty hard. My guess is that its temp ie cold pad material and new pads that are not worn in yet.

I wish that would have happened to our brakes. WE have 3300 miles on our GLC and squealing is as loud as ever in reverse.

Thanks for everyones feedback on my noisy transmission noise when my GLC is cold. The dealer thinks its just the overnight 'film' that build up on the brake discs, but i'm not convinced. So - Ive booked it in overnight - so that they can try to hear it when cold.
Will let you all know next month :-)

I took the GLC300 into service because the passenger side control for the headrest did not work. It felt like the button mechanism was stuck. He said it was a dummy button and that the headrest was not powered but rather manual.

Does your GLC have a powered passenger headrest?
