Head-Up Display Question

I have a new GLC on order scheduled for production next week. One of the options I selected is the Head-Up Display (HUD). I have never driven a vehicle with a HUD so I'm not familiar with them, sounds like a good idea though.

Somewhere on one of these forums, it was mentioned that the vehicles with the HUD option are equipped with a special glass windshield (that incidentally might have better acoustic properties). That is presumably to give the windshield more reflectivity for the upward projected lighting from the dash imbedded HUD.

The Garmin company makes a small portable HUD unit for use with their dashboard GPS's, smartphone GPS's etc. That little HUD device comes with a stick-on "clear" plastic sheet to attach to the inside of your windshield to give the windshield more reflectivity, implying that a regular windshield does not reflect well enough.

I therefore assume that my GLC will have a windshield that reflects light better than other windshields (or perhaps reflects better in a small portion of the windshield?). My question for those who actually have the HUD equipped GLC is: Does your windshield have a propensity for unwanted, annoying, reflections, like sunlight reflecting off the dashboard or whatever?

Thanks

Al

I have the HUD on my GLC, not because I particularly wanted it, only because my vehicle came equipped with it. Having said that, I'm really enjoying it. It displays speed, direction of travel, and turn by turn navigation directions. Not having to look down at your odometer to check your speed is really nice. I haven't noticed any difference in the refectivity of the windshield, either during the day or night.

Congratulations on your order for the GLC.
We have recently taken delivery of ours and it was a requirement on our shopping list. Serve real other brands failed the HUD test as it was not an option. We have it in the Lexus and it's great. The GLC is not as supple as the Lexus, bit chunkier in visual, slightly bigger font and it projects higher on the screen. That said it is still great, I would not buy a car without this feature, you quickly adapt to see through the info whilst keeping your eyes on the road, but still aware of your speed and any navigation prompts. You can adjust height of display for each driver.
Reflection or other issues with screen in either Lexus or GLC have never been an issue.
Enjoy your new ride.

The windscreen is different but the difference isn't visually apparent. It works just like a standard transparency.

Should it ever need replacement ensure the shop is aware its a hud.

I've been driving hud equipted cars since 1989 and am a big fan.

Back in year 2012, I drove Toyota Prius with HUD. That was my first time to drive a car with HUD and the experience was awesome! Then, I drove another car without HUD for couple of years. For some reasons, I am driving Prius (another one) without HUD now.

At least from my experience on 2 Prius, no difference on windshield. Garmin and "plastic sheet" you mentioned are just because they are aftermarket products, and they cannot consider every car's windshield glass quality and reflection. So they need to do plastic sheet in order to properly reflect image on windshield.

For those car with factory designed and installed HUD, like Toyota, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, you won't see "plastic sheet" on your windshield.

When I ordered GLC in late January, definitely I had HUD on my build sheet. Very look forward to that~

Test drove GLC with the head up display. Really nice feature, however if you have polarised sun glasses you can't see it! Funny though because we had a rental Peugeot 508 in Europe a couple of years ago and it was fine with polarised sunnies...
