Object detection?

I have my new GLC and am gradually learning the details. So far, very impressive.

I have a question which I have taken to my dealer and haven't yet received an answer. It is about the "object detection" feature.

First of all, the manuals... Long before the GLC arrived I downloaded the manuals from the mbusa website, to study in preparation. These consisted of the "Owners Manual" and the "COMAND Manual."

With my GLC was the nice little black case with the bundle of pertinent literature. In the case was an "Operator's" manual, but no COMAND manual. The operator's manual does however have a brief chapter (24 pages) on COMAND. The downloaded COMAND manual has 222 pages.

In the downloaded COMAND manual are very specific instructions on setting the rear view camera for a feature called: "object detection" for moving objects. Pages 53 and 54 of the downloaded manual. The directions say very clearly to go to the "rear view camera" selection under system settings, and then click on the "object detection" selection.

My GLC does not have a "rear view camera" selection, nor an "object detection" selection. It does have a "360 Degree Camera" setting but there is nothing in there except for "open the cover."

Is it just my GLC, am I doing it wrong?

Make sure you are in " System Settings" at the bottom left corner of the nav screen. Once you are in there you should be able to scroll down to 'rear view camera', once you press that, a side menu should open up with the options. I did read however that object detection only works when the rear camera is in the 180 mode. I do not have the 360 camera setup, not sure if that would make a difference.

It doesn't work on my GLC (or I am doing something wrong) I go to system settings and there is no "rear view camera" option. There are a bunch of other options, including "360 degree camera."

Does it actually work that way on your GLC?

Did you look inside the options for the 360 degree camera?

It actually worked that way on my GLC but, once again I don't have the 360 degree camera set up on my GLC.

Yes. There is only one selection under the "360 Degree Camera" and that is open the rear view camera cover (for cleaning the lens).

Hmmm, guess you don't get that feature. That's too bad. You might want to go to the Dealer and see if they know more. Good Luck.

I believe the "Object Detection" feature of Command is found only on the S series.

I don't know of a US GLC with this feature - you can check your Menu in Settings - please note in the preface the gist is that just because a feature is described in the manual - that does not necessarily mean your MB has that feature.

Keep the beat !

Which package do you have? I have amongst other packages the 320 and 997. But, don't have object detection.

Weird. That's where I was and my only option was to open the camera cover. Are you in the U. S.?

I appreciate the post - frankly following GLC owner's for their interest and feedback -m and this post kindof set off a small dust storm.. of what was found so far with cursory look this afternoon (on site with 17 C-Coupe) Object Detection so far is mentioned in at least 3 manuals : yes. 2016 GLC, 2016 C-Sedan, and 2017 C-Coupe ....

Back to the GLC - with 4 non-360 camera/non-parking-assist rigs at hand - 1 had Object Detection in Settings Menu which was factory default to On - and 3 same non-360/non-parking-assist did not have Object Selection in Menu Setting.

Sent two of my sales rug-rats (afffectionate term) out with the Object Selection rig and print out from the manual - and a BIG parking lot and whatever else they wanted/needed to pull - and 90 minutes later they reported they couldn't get see any indicators.

I had a MB C-Class Asst Product Specialist on-site with the C-Coupe - had her upload to Product Manager - I sent a personal text to my upper contact in Atlanta over the "Compact Group".

Best "guess" - have no idea on what assumptions to make...

I like this board for Discovery like this.. healthy..

A little more input... The concierge at one of our local dealers in Illinois personally checked four GLCs and none of them had the object detection option.

My new GLC does have the 360 degree camera and does not have object detection.

Given the cameras, I guess we'll have to resort to pairing them with the old school use of our eyes for object detection

From what I can decipher from the owners manual it seems 'object detection' is supposed to be part of the 'self parking' feature. Even though I have the 'object detection' on my menu I do not have the 'self parking' feature on my GLC. So today I tried it out in a parking lot, even though it was activated it did not pick up any moving objects, of which there were several. The additional sensors that come with the parking feature are needed.

So, those of you with 'self parking' should head back to the dealer and have them update your software for that feature. Just my thought.

Funny, I followed the pics and sure enough I've got it on the menu but it does not really do anything for me since I don't have the self parking option.

The rear camera has to be in the 180 degree mode for the object detection to work.
I tried it a couple times, not working.

OK, I called Mercedes to ask what's up with the object detection. After a couple of days of research, they got back to me and said that object detection is signified by lines around the bumpers in the overhead view. Thin yellow lines means the bumpers are clear, thicker yellow lines means there is an object nearby, and red means the object is very close (that's also when the system starts to beep at you).

I have seen this when backing out of my garage and also when I use the 360 camera to check my spacing in tight parking spots so I guess it works. I don't know why the menu options aren't available for those of us with the parking package but I would guess it's because it's just always on for that package.
