Moving to neutral while in motion

While driving along the road recently I accidently flicked the gear selector into neutral (my other car has windscreen wiper stalk on same side as selector in GLC).

My question is...would it be dangerous/damaging to reselect drive in this situation while in motion?

It also got me wondering, if I accidently pressed P while in motion would the park brake be engaged?

I can't answer the second one but when my wife did the same on our test drive of the GLC (it was her first ever outing in an automatic and was half way around one of the busiest 3 lane roundabouts in Milton Keynes), the salesman was very matter of fact about it and said just push the lever down, stating that it was no problem for the car to deal with the situation. OK so he may have been in nice guy mode because he was angling for a sale but he didn't wince when he said that the car would not suffer adversely from this.

I have been wondering/worrying about this same question, especially since in Consumer Reports' video review, they thought it would be easy to hit the gear selector when you're looking for the windshield wipers.

To make matters worse, the manual (p.143) says D->R, R->D or hitting park while moving could damage the transmission.

I was hoping such an attempt would somehow be electronically "blocked", with a message on the screen like "Surely you didn't mean to try that!!"

There is an electronic lockout that prevents potentially damaging shifts.

One quirk though is the automatic shift to PARK if the door is opened with engine running. On two occasions when parking curbside with the curb on the driver's side I opened the door slightly, while slowing backing up, to check my distance to the curb and was greeted with the parking brake slamming on, which then has to be manually released. I understand the safety aspect of this and now accept that my door opening habit is history.

Glad to hear about the electronic lockout.
Opening the passenger door in motion also engages the parking brake which I discovered the hard way while my son was preparing to make a quick exit!!!

That feature pisses me off. I was used to picking up my newspaper from the driveway in the morning by scooping it up from the drivers seat with the door open so I knew where to stop to easily reach it. Now I have to very carefully calibrate where I stop so that the paper is in reach.

On the other hand, it's 2016 and I still get a newspaper delivered, so many of you may be thinking "what the f**k does he know anyway".

The quickest way to screw up my day is for me to open my garage door and not see my newspaper lying on the driveway.
