GLC 350d

I was just on the UK configurator to look at my GLC 43 configuration again, and I noticed the GLC 350d appeared on it. Now I've not been impressed at all with the current 220d 250d models, I found them too slow, to much hard work to get going, and did a Fred Flintstone impression at the test drive to hurry them along.

The sensible part of me really wanted to like the diesel options but I just couldn't live with such an underpowered vehicle. Hence I went to for the mad mans option and got a petrol GLC 43 AMG.

But when I ordered last month I did say that if the 350d was available the choice would be much harder as that is such a fantastic engine.

Part of me is glad it wasn't out at the time as I would have never been tempted to go down the AMG route, but the other part of me is sad as it would be a great economical choice.

Anyway future GLC owners win, as there are now finally to great engines available which the car really needed.

It's an interesting point.
Given that (in the UK at least) the prices are very close, I am very happy with petrol (don't really like diesel anyway) and the extra hundred horses.
Every way I measure it - vs 350d,vs Macan/F-Pace amd vs US and German prices - I think the GLC 43 in the UK (with a c. 10% discount) is a bit of a bargain and surprised there isn't a £10k premium to the 350d.
On the economy point, I think it is overrated by both media and public. In real life driving the official numbers tend to be closer (I replaced a diesel X5 with a 4.8iS) and the major cost of any new car is depreciation compared to which 5 -10 mpg is not hugely significant unless your mileages are big.
Looking forward to mine turning up!

what engine is in it? In the US, we only have 2 diesel engine variants. the OM642 turbo 6 cylinder and the OM651 twin turbo 4 cylinder. Both have nearly identical performance, the OM651 has better low-end acceleration.

According to the specs it looks to be the same V6 twin turbo diesel unit as the GL350 Bluetec. So 258Hp and 620Nm. No idea about the engine model numbers.

I did not test drive the 220d, but did the 250d 4 cylinder twin turbo 204Hp and 500Nm. I really did not like that, I didn't feel secure powerful enough overtaking on the small UK roads and when flooring it it is just an underwhelming sensation. The Porsche Mac just blows it away against those models, as does the Jaguar F Pace. So for the UK market I think it is very good they have now introduced a 3.0 twin turbo diesel to go along side the AMG Petrol model.

It's not looking good for any diesel-powered GLC's in the US. After repeated delays, the C Class diesel has been canceled (or at least delayed indefinitely), and it's assumed the GLC 300D has been axed, too. Even the GLE 300D has not been certified for 2017. Whether you blame the EPA or VW for putting the industry under a microscope really doesn't matter. As usual, it's the consumer that loses.

The extra power and torque would make the 350d an interesting proposition but the extra weight of the V6 may change the balance of the car.

Just priced my 43 against the nearest spec 350d and the 350d came out only £900 cheaper (though I git bigger wheels and nicer seats imho). And I prefer petrol and the +100 hp. Nice to have the choice though.
Regarding "GLC 43 in the UK (with a c. 10% discount)" - just heard that MB have verboten discounting since last month on the GLC as there is under-supply here

I was following GLC 250d on carwow for a while now; around 6% was the max I every received. Was 10% only for GLC 43?
