Yeah...that was my thought. I told a few fibs in my younger years that got me out of a few accidents that were my fault.

If not the phone, maybe all the electronics in the car (they can be distracting) can be to blame.

Good point, mobile phones are keeping panel beaters in business these days. Still find it strange that brake assist did not stop the vehicle. Maybe she had been riding the brakes causing them to overheat. This would cause the low brake pedal and hot rotors.

To clear up any confusion, the GLC does in fact have have an EDR. Times change and the automotive business is no exception.

Agree. GLC is a EDR supported car. In fact 97% of new cars on the market are.

From the images and the very low cost of repair, some combination of your daughter and the mercedes did apply the brakes and avoided much greater damage.

A 30-35mph rear end with no brakes involved would look more like this:

Could it be possible that your daughter went to apply the brakes but the mercedes was already applying them, which is why she felt they weren't responding?

As a father - your daughter was accelerating directly towards a stopped car - and the safety systems caught that - and minimized the damage to $2K for both cars.
As a new GLC owner I've been following this thread with interest. fabbrisd1's comments re: the limited damage explain why the insurance on my new GLC was only a little more annually than my '06 Highlander! That was my suspicion, which has been confirmed here.

I'm glad your daughter and no one else was injured in the accident, however it happened.
