Can This Be Turned Off?

On the GLC (or I guess any model) can you turn off active/radar cruise control and just use regular cruise control? Or if you shut that off do you lose cruise control altogether?

Thanks.

You can turn off the steering assist by pressing the button to the left of the wheel on LHD cars. I'm assuming it's to the right of the wheel on RHD cars.

There is no logical reason to turn of the radar. The following distance is adjusted with the rotary knob on the stalk.

Distronic is amazing in stop and go traffic. I use it everyday and the worst part of my commute was transformed from awful to only slightly annoying. Love it.

Agree with Mr. J. I think of Distronics as Cruise Contol on Steroids. There is a definite learning curve. But once you learn it’s idiosyncrasies it pretty cool. Suggest you read Operators manual starting on page 162 for cruise control and page 164 for Distronics.

agree 100%. I hated it at first, but after learning to use it it has become welcome as it does make driving on the highway much more relaxin. it does take some time getting used to it

I can think of a few logical reasons. In the winter when the road is covered in muck that blocks the sensor and then you get the "sensor dirty" message on the dash, and you want to use traditional (non-radar) cruise control, can you?

If the sensors become dirty (and it doesn't take much) you will see an error message. This renders the Distronic II inop.

So, without radar the cruise control is not functional.

Just so we're clear (I have an order that's getting ready to be locked in) if the radar function is not active or you otherwise turn it off, there is NO cruise control at all? i.e. the standard cruise control (non-distronic) is not available?

Thanks

There is no cruise control if the distronic is not active.

I have to say I'm really surprised at how many people are saying the sensors get dirty easily ...

I have been using the feature (not in a mercedes) for the last 2 years, and never drive on the highway without it -- makes the drive so much more relaxing. We rarely ever wash that car (don't judge! ) -- we have never, once run into a dirty sensor issue. And this is a Nissan -- so not a crazy high end vehicle ..

I'm hoping the sensors aren't as ****ty as people are claiming they are, as I really love the distronic feature ...

Most of those complaining about dirty sensors seem to live in climates where they receive a lot of snow and ice, which builds up in front of the radar sensors. If, like me, you live in a warmer clime, it doesn't seem to be an issue.

Of course, I haven't experienced the problem myself, so I could be wrong, but that's the impression I get here.

I've experienced dirty sensors but once.

It was winter, at or close to freezing. The roads were wet and slushly resulting in buildup on the front of the vehicle.

Since then, on many occasions have driven in pouring down rain with no problem.

My view is, Distronic II is the best thing since canned beer.

I called Mercedes and they confirmed that if the sensor is dirty, you get NO cruise control at all. Not even regular. If you don't have the package, then you always get regular cruise control.

Don't know about you guys, but I don't use cruise control while driving in snow and ice.

If you're that concerned about being inconvenienced once in a while with a dirty sensor, which I have not seen discussed as a huge problem from what I've read, then you should get the "regular" cruise control. I wouldn't pay any attention to all the rave reviews about how the DISTRONIC CC makes traveling so much less stressful and much more enjoyable.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but although I think you're making a very logical argument, it's one that will not necessarily be a reality.

For me, I can't wait to not have to jam on my brakes because the guy in front of me slowed up momentarily to turn or whatever. If dirty sensors becomes a problem, I'll just keep some paper towels in the back.

sorry if this is a stupid question but the distronic sensor is the one on the nose correct? and the one high on the windshield is for lane keep assist?

it is too bad that you cant go back to "regular" cruise control if the sensor is dirty, but i can see this becoming confusing so its likely better it works or it doesnt.

maybe in a couple years they will put a windshield wiper on the sensor

I've never had to clean the sensors and I've only ever heard of this happening in the US midWest and Canadian interior where the winter driving is very snowy and icy.

I don't consider the Distronic sensors dirty problematic. Over two winters have experienced the warning but once. This is in sw Ohio where we have our share of winter driving conditions.

That said, am not a fan of nannys in general, but I do like the Distronic. Primarily because of it's seamless operation.

I would not spec. a vehicle without this feature.
