WLAn question

I'm not sure I fully understand how the car's wifi works. Comand connects to my iphone6 and provides internet access, as expected. I also have an old iphone5, which doesn't have a sim and which has a radar detection app that requires internet access. Rather than hotspotting it to my iphone6, I thought that connecting it to the Comand's wifi (WLAN MB XXXXX) would do the trick. However it seems that this WLAN does not have internet access......so what's the point of it - or am I missing something?

i believe you have to buy one of the upgraded mbrace plans (you do get them complimentary for a short time for trials)

i can likewise connect my car to the wifi, but as i only have the free plan it has no internet access

do basically its there if you want to pay MB for a hotspot so your phone could use the mb data plan instead of your own phone data plan

I only have the free 5 year mBrace Connect plan and, while it was a little challenging to set up, the MB WLAN does allow you to connect an iPad or other device to to MB Wifi. I do NOT have an upgraded plan.

I was in another city recently and needed to locate several businesses and my wife located them using an iPad. I checked and under wifi settings it said "MB WLAN" or something like that. And it showed a wifi icon in the upper left of the iPad. I'm not sure how much data you can use, but I was definitely connected to the internet.

Like I said, it's a little confusing getting there but if a 66 yo guy can do it, I'm sure you can too!

I'm not sure if these instructions work, but give them a try:

https://www.mbusa.com/vcm/MB/Digital...Fact_Sheet.pdf

Page 38 & 39 of the Comand Manual also talks about it. I believe I used the "Connect the device via the security key" method.

Hope this helps!

Kenny, I noticed you have a hybrid but I would think the mBrace feature would work the same in it.

And I hate to be dumb, but I don't know where you are. Not sure what CH means as a country. Some features are country specific, so maybe you CAN'T get internet access.

But ajmtbm I'm pretty sure you can. And it actually was reasonably fast for what I was doing.

CH is Switzerland....I have now updated my profile.....

Perhaps you're right and it is country-specific. I've certainly never heard of mbrace over here. I certainly am able to connect to the MB WLAN, by specifying the ssid password, but this wifi does not seem to see the outside world. Not a show-stopper really, but I will enquire at the local dealer.

Thanks for your suggestions

Think you need to get a sim card for the vehicle in Europe, Canada can tether and in the US we get (coughs) M-brace.

Add'l subscriptions may be req'd for WiFi

I may have misspoken, aim. I did some more checking and it appears you get WiFi with the "Entertain" subscription ($18/mo) and to get that you have to have the "Secure" subscription ($199/yr) according to this:

"mBrace Entertain requires subscription to mbrace Connect, 5 year complimentary ($0.00) service, and mbrace Secure ($199/year). You will receive a 3-month trial period of mbrace Entertain services, after which your credit card will be automatically billed."

Looks like I won't have MB WLAN wifi much longer! Before that I was using a personal hotspot on my iPhone (for my iPad internet connection)and my backup to that is Comcast secure wifi (not their "free" hotspots) which are available in most cities. Otherwise I'll just use phone data if I'm in the boonies and need internet access.

All the above is for service in the US.

Sorry I had this wrong.

thanks for the clarification, so basically once you have mbrace you can pay $30 per month for internet access. in this day and age of unlimited internet amongst the 3 major carriers in the US, i dont see this as a major deal.

i basically like the embrace for the remote start stop. beyond that the other features of that and the other 2 packages are of limited interest to me. any idea how much the basic brace it is annually once the freebie period ends?

I looked a little and while I saw some prices for some other "flavors" of mbrace for other MB lines, I could not find any mention of what the basic mBrace Connect pkg will cost after the 5 year free subscription. I really don't think they know and they'll probably give it to you free, as long as you subscribe to some of the higher level services.

Here's their official info on the entire mBrace services, except for what mBrace Connect will cost after 5 years!

Like you and others, I find the remote start useful sometimes and maybe the lock/unlock, although I don't know when I failed to lock my car. It's just a habit to lock it.
