I'm new to MB, as I've owned BMWs the last 10 or so years. However, in the BMWs, the heating element in the mirrors was turned on when I switch on my rear defroster. I would bet it's the same for my GLC.

speaking of the side mirrors, there seems to be a slightly darker area in the center and a lighter color border on the mirrors. is this the heating element area in the center or perhaps the anti-glare?

I'd image that's part of the auto-dimming. Our rear mirror and driver's side mirror have a ring around them, but the passenger side does not. The driver's and rear mirror both auto dim.
I assume the heating element is on the backside and heats the entire glass. That's how it was on BMW, at least.
