Tire replacement

Hi,

I am due for tire change, only the front pairs.

Is it possible to just change the fronts?

My total mileage is around 25k miles. A bit disappointed with the stock Pirellis

My question is why are your fronts wearing so much faster than the rears that you have to change them without changing the rears too?

No idea, my fronts are gone, but the rears are still in good condition. Both front and rear are stock Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres

Isn't that an expected and known issue due to crabbing?

In short, yes you can replace only the front pair. But, I would get your alignment checked. Because your fronts should not wear disproportionally from the rears.

And it does not have to be the same model or brand tire. It is not an ideal situation to have mixed tires. But, you can do it. It only becomes a problem if you mix tires left to right.

Avoid mixing runflats/ non run flats front and back, chassis dynamics will be compromised due to sidewall flex

There are some other threads in this forum regarding cobbling-together a spare tire setup (if you go to non-run-flats).

Also at least one thread I saw with someone outright replacing the run flats with a regular setup (General Tires, IIRC), but IDK if he/she ever reported back any long term results...you could ask!

Why not spend the extra money and replace all 4 with a quality non run flats and take care of them rotation and balance every year and have a peace of mind for the next 5 years?
Donate the rear tires.

I think I am leaning towards this plan

+1 - This is what I did. Replaced run flats at 2k with non run flat and have tires stored in the garage. Will have them re-installed when I return lease. Rotate myself every 5-6K. Much better ride overall - Keep them at 31-32 PSI cold and ride is really nice. Never looking back and will do the same with every car I get that comes with RF.

Would you say ride and comfort is completely transformed?

How about the handling?

Just replaced the OEM Pirelli Scorpion Verde run-flats (19") with Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady non-run-flats. So far, ride is very noticeably improved (despite the tire shop setting the pressures at 38/44 F/R) and hydroplaning seems much better. Looking forward to the first road trip with these tires!
