Auto Start/Stop Issue Resolved

I have a used 2016 GLC 43 AMG that I bought in March. The start/stop function hasn’t worked since purchase. Took it to one garage and they couldn’t find an issue. They suggested that I take it to MB for a software update so I did. MB did the update (still not sure what it was). They told me that the battery needed to be charged. I hooked it up to a trickle charger to fully charge it then ran a repair with a Genius 5. Still wouldn’t work. I had the battery replaced as the one in the vehicle was the original. Both shops told me that the reading were fine on the main and auxiliary batteries.

It finally worked after the battery replacement! Just wanted to share.

It's pretty common in most cars with start-stop. As the battery ages the floating voltage decreases, until a point where the vehicles electronics management decides it is indicative of poorer battery performance. At this point the vehicle won't activate start-stop to avoid straining the battery. Charging the battery won't help, as it doesn't affect the float voltage.

So it is in essence a dumb system, as it can't tell between a battery with poor performance or an older battery that is in good health (ie, charged every 2 weeks like I do with my F-Type and the GLC).

The one thing I wonder, is if a lithium ion battery (they maintain floating voltage very well until they are nearly dead) would solve this. I've heard no, because the float voltage is different, even if it is rock solid.
