should I get extended warranty?

hey all. my 2018 GLC300 4matic warranty will be up in november (currently at 49k miles. I bought at 48k miles)

wondering if an extended warranty will be worth it given my situation. see below:
  • since 0 miles: maintained at dealership on schedule
  • avg. miles driven per year: 3-4k max
  • driving ratio: 70% city, 30% highway
  • driving style: conservative with rare spirited
  • currently no signs of anything going wrong. very smooth on all fronts
  • plan to keep car another 3-4 years
thanks in advance!

You have the M274 engine that has a strong history of expensive failures. MB began using another engine in the model year 2020. Your mileage range has instances of reported issues. With planned 4 more years of ownership, the car will be 8 years old. Insurance coverage out that far can be hard to justify. I would have bought it as a CPO and opted for the extended limited warranty (+2yrs after original expires) instead of these 3rd party options. I've heard many nightmares fighting for claim coverage. If you hang around these forums long enough, I believe you will find that there's no perfect design though some are better. It boils down to your risk tolerance as a function of expense on a depreciating asset. Since 2007, I'm on my 3rd MB. My wife is on her second. We've been lucky but lived thru a long list of potential failures. I say it comes with ownership. Remember that it's rare for every vehicle to suffer the same failure fate for reasons such as design and parts revisions are happening even within a specific model year. Good luck.

I recommend you get an MB extended warranty, but you must do it before your factory warranty expires. Years ago, the COMAND system in my SL died, and the refurbished unit cost $8K just for the part. My ext warranty covered it as a "factory-installed radio."

We've bought exactly one extended warranty in our 25 years of marriage, and it was for our 2017 GLC300. We felt we had to if we were going to keep the car for a while as planned. We had a couple instances where the COMAND system went completely dark (returned to normal on restart), and some very odd transmission behavior that has since mysteriously rectified itself. Still, it's peace of mind, and if we unload the car earlier than expected we can still get a prorated refund.
