Digital instrument display vs analog

Hello!

I am about to buy an GLC PHEV (300e or 300de, not decided yet) about a year old, up to 30.000 km. One thing I cannot decide about is on which instrument display to choose. There are better offers with analog displays, digital displays are rare among the cars I am looking for. So what is the real difference between two? Is there a lot more funcionalities with digital display? Is there some other equipment coming in the package with digital display? How is digital display working in the middle of a bright summer day with sunglasses on?

There will be no visibility issues with the digital instrument display as the casing surrounding it helps prevent glare plus the screen is matte so it will not have any issues with reflections. Functionalities wise, you are mainly missing out on display styles I think.

The main difference is the layout customization and you get two areas where you can customize what you wanna see. With the analog cluster you are stuck with the two gauges and only one digital display in the middle where you can only see one thing at a time. Also the digital display can show more things such as navigation map etc. However, with the non-AMG models the layouts are somewhat uninteresting, because they still imitate a classic speedometer and rev counter side-by-side cluster. IMO, the customizable layouts are only interesting with AMGs, specifically the Supersport layout shown below that gets rid of the useless speedometer and puts revs and current gear front and center. This is what I use as I find an analog speedometer a waste of space. All I need is a digital speed readout. So then the space that frees up on the left and right I can use to show more relevant information.

Thank you :-) So, there is not much lost without digital cluster... This limited abilities do not bother me too much, I can live without. Funcionality on AMG is interesting and that is the way it shoul work an all. Is there some software patch to have this funcionality on normal versions of GLC? It is really weird how Mercedes deals with extras. I was shocked when realised that all PHEV GLC have electric seats, but you have to pay extra for the memory :-) I do not understand how is possible to have electric seats without memory function. I would rather have manual in that case..

Yes there is a way to retrofit those screen designs for the digital screen, aftermarket wise you can code it to the AMG version but a lot of things that requires hardware like certain temperatures from sensors in various engine/transmission configurations will not be displayed correctly. You could also technically retrofit the digital screen from analog if you change your mind down the road but the cost will be way more than say equipped from factory as there might be additional hardware or harnesses required to make things work.
