Plugging a run flat tire

Plugging a run flat tire
Had a large nail right in the middle of the tread of the tire. Brought it to a local tire shop and he said that all I needed was a plug. Asked him about getting a patch on the inside of the tire, he assured me that he the plug will last for as long as I keep the tire. In the past I always had the tire repaired from the inside. They are 19 inch Pirelli run flats, anyone have a bad experience with plugging a tire?

I have had run flat MOE tyres plugged with mushroom type plugs by tyre dealers.
Biggest reason why they refuse is two fold, some tyre manuf put a blanket No to avoid lawyer issues. Second more real reason is they have no idea if owner has driven when flat (less than 15psi) as this will severely damage side walls, de-lamination and risk of tyre wall blow out.
If hole is not near side walls and you have not driven on it flat then I would happily plug the tyre if it was my tyre.
