Oil Change

Just got my wife's GLC300 back from dealer for warranty work. They said I change the oil too much (I do every 3000 to 4000 miles) and that could cause issues.
They did not elaborate on the issues, I was not there.

I don't spill oil. Have Stalbus valve, I use Mobile 1 5W30 EP, and the engine is clean.

They said I should change it less. Never hear of issues with too many oil changes.

I have never heard of that either.

I change the oil on my wife's GLC300 every 5k.

Wow, I would love to know what issues it could cause.
I do change oil every 3K miles only due to too low viscosity. I have 4 oil tests reports for different oil brands and still the same result.
Im using 229.5 oil 5W40

Lengthy discussion here:

https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/th...engine.132462/

I couldn't see any definitive conclusions one way or the other.

I think the recommended oil for your GLC is 229.5 spec 5W40

I use ESP oil. The manual states the need for 229.51, 229.52, 229.61, 229.71 spec oil
I don't think there is a 5W40 with 229.51 / 229.52

Mobile 1 ESP 5W30MB-Approval 229.31
MB-Approval 229.51
MB-Approval 229.52

Dealer BS. They want your money and realize you are preventing them from having (more of) it.

Im not a fan of additional parts (Stahlbus valve) in an engine-critical location but it’s your car.

Its a 2020. My S550 takes 229.5. But with the GLC they updated the specs.
I love the Stalbus valves. The oil has to be a bit warmer and it takes a bit longer, but never had any issues. I had Fumoto and they leaked a bit and they are quite a bit bigger than the Stahlbus valve
Also didnt like the way the fumoto valve opened or could open.

No issues with Stahlbus. It also has a cap, so even if it would leak, I am sure the cap would stop it leaking catastrophically. Cap has never even come undone by itself

GLC from 2016 on has 229.51. 2020 has 229.52
I downloaded the owners manuals from Mercedes. Mobile 1 FS 5W40 European is 229.5

There has been talk on other forums of a new spec to discourage low speed pre-ignition, LSPI.

I think I know the post what you referring to, should MB update the spec for old engines too?
to fight with LSPI oil should be API SN Plus or API SP standard, some oils in 229.5 are API SP but most are not.
the same for 229.51 some API SP and some API SN
It's not clear to me it was change for LSPI

2018 for sure MB recommends 229.5, the same for 2019

I only drive 3,000-4,000 miles per year, but change my oil every 12 months because oil gets old, not because of the mileage I've driven. And frankly, even that may be a stretch. I can't think of a reason why "old" oil could be better than new oil. It's not like you're seasoning a cast iron pan.

That’s exactly what I do if I do not rack up the miles on any of our cars. AT LEAST once every 12 months, regardless of miles driven.
