Steering wheel disengages?

I bought a new 2024 GLC yesterday to replace our 12 year old GLK350. Love it so far. Question: When sitting at a red light and the engine
shuts off, the steering wheel goes limp, as if it is not engaged to the front wheels. Once I release the brakes and the engine starts, the feel
of the steering wheel returns. Is this normal?

Normal, when vehicle engine is turned off, power steering is cut off so you have to steer the vehicle manually which is difficult.

Edit: Oh wait, you said it goes limp, I forgot but is the GLC steer by wire? So it is the opposite then. The steering is turned off and disconnected from the control module that actually turns the wheels.

I might be totally wrong though.

I will have to test this out later. The wheels should still turn otherwise the steering wheel and the tire direction would be out of whack.

Electric power steering the electric is just a power assist to make it easier to steer.

Probably has some algorithm tat plays with amount of assist based on speed and car driving mode but I am guessing
