On a whim, I used the auto-parking feature. Pressed the button as I was driving slow down the road. I got an alert that it found a suitable spot (that I would have never even tried to get into). It was sort of scary to let it do its work, but it did it perfectly. All sort of brake noise and steering wheel whirring, but good to know it can actually be a useful feature.

It's very useful! I always use it when parking in an extra tight spot. My boyfriend however can never get it to work in his 350e. The trick is to drive under 10mph as close as you can to the spot. Always works for me.

I wish they brought back the option that would allow you to choose whether to park head in or out like in the w205. It would also pull you out of the spot automatically.

That's all still there. Tap the selected parking space to rotate the direction in which you wanna park. It's indicated by the circular arrows over the selected parking spot. The Exit function is also still there.

I don't really use the automatic parking assist. I've used it at the beginning before I had a proper feel for the dimensions of the car, and to park on a dark street once where I couldn't make out the curb even on the 360 camera, but the assistant had no issue getting in the spot. Otherwise it's still far quicker to park myself, especially parallel parking with other drivers stopping too close and breathing down my neck, so that the assistant refuses to move and we end up in a Mexican standoff. I also never park in tight spots in the first place. That's just inviting dings and scratches from careless others.

Superswiss thank you for the informative post. Responses like this are the reason I keep following this site even though I have to keep ploughing through inane posts/responses like “i don’t know, thank you, can’t help you, I didn’t know that” etc..

It is kinda a trick to get the button presses right...then, you never need to learn again. Yes, it is freaky to watch the wheel spin like mad and just let er rip.....
