It is a class 3 but the parts that it bolts onto will only support 3500# of towing - has nothing at all to do with the strength of the hitch and EVERYTHING to do with the structure of the vehicle where the hitch is attached. That's why they are all the same.

Are they building the European ones different? Theirs apparently can tow 5k. I would think not

maybe the bumper requirements for US vs Europe are different - 5mph no damage?

Probably !
I watched you tube video of hitch installation in Europe .
Look like the bumper are different in Europe then US
When adding a hitch on a car in Europe they don't put the impact bar back on the car , my guess is the hitch is the new impact bar .
I also notice that the hitch is directly bolt on the car and use additional bracket in pre-drilled area .
In the US on the GLC the hitch is sandwich between the impact bar and the body ,that's it . In case of rear impact ,that doesn't change anything .The issue is the amount of weight on the tongue .
Might be the reason why euro is rated at 5000lb and US at 3500lb .

First picture is for GLC 43 euro (you can see the additional parts going in the body)

The second is GLC US version (not exactly the same)

I’ll be honest the us version looks beefier. The attatchment points would not change us vs eu. The stealth hitch is rated for higher tow capacities. The crash bar removal would def have something to do with the factory installed tow hitch rating but aftermarket I don’t know. The attachment strength should be the same. If removal of the rear crash bar gives me a 5k tow capacity it’s good for me. Some how it’s great for Europe but bad for us.
