GLC43 brake replacement

I have a 2018 GLC43 with ~35K miles. I don't have the worn brake pad lights on yet and the car is on the original pads and rotors. At a recent oil change the shop recommended a rear brake pad and rotor change for almost $1200. I see MB rotors are around $80 each and I have done brake changes before, so I'd like to attempt this on my own:

(1) what pads do you guys recommend to go with the standard rotors? I originally saw a brembo set but I'm hoping to go with something that is low dust and long(er) lasting;

(2) are the standard MB rotors recommended to use or should I consider something else?

(3) where can I find the thickness specs for the current rotors to see if I just need a pad change? Looking very closely to the rotors they are *not* smooth as newer ones but have some grooves/lines in them.

Thank you!

Most of us, in a Private GLC63 club, use Posi-Quiet; Ceramic from RockAuto. They stop great and have about a 60% reduction in brake dust. Rotors usually need changed every other pad change but 35,000 miles is getting on up there. I get a bout 20,000 miles on pads.

Thanks - the link did not pull up anything did you mean the Centric part?

CENTRIC10518720Posi-Quiet; Ceramic

I guess it's GLC43 and GLC63 for the same part...also only $30 for rear pads?

I didn't look up specific part numbers and I have no idea if they are the same for 43 vs 63, put your model in there or call them.

Awesome brakes, stop great, quiet and very little brake dust.

I am new to MB but have had other performance vehicles, and with that background...

$1,200 for only rears seems very expensive - find an independent shop. Also, having your rear brakes wear faster than the fronts is unusual, at least from what I've experienced. Maybe the fronts dissipate heat so much better, due to size, and therefore don't wear as fast...? Anyone have a thought on this?

Yes I think there are threads in here that the rears wear faster due to the automatic parking brake plus some other automatic braking features? I don't drive the car that much in the highway assist or lane keep but for some reason that's what the shop said.

The cheapest independent requested $850 so there are some savings but I don't see how this is from a $50 set of pads and $160 set of rear rotors?

As mentioned above, centric, Akebono, brake world pads, hawk ceramics, etc will all work....there are youtube videos showing the steps to change rear rotors/pads.

There is a procedure that needs to be done to electronically release the parking brake to allow for the piston in the caliper to retract. If you force it without doing this, you can destroy the caliper. OE MB, brembo, centric, powerstop, any will work for rotors.

The rears wear faster because of the stability control system using the rear brakes to slow things down and restore traction, along with keeping speed using your cruise control. If you turn off stability control or in Sport Mode for the traction control, you will reduce the rear brake usage without depressing the brake pedal as well.

Good luck!
