For order, when do you get VIN?

For order, when do you get VIN?
On August 2 my dealer told me the GLC 63 I ordered was "in production". When I asked for the VIN they said it's not available until it's "produced". Is that true? Seems odd, I get a VIN for Ford when the build is scheduled.
I'm concerned they are going to pull a fast one and sell it from under me.

That is correct. The VIN is assigned during one of the final steps of production. I forget the status code, but it's towards the end. They don't burn VINs in case the order gets cancelled. You get a PO # when the order it placed in the system, and unless there is a PO #, the order doesn't exist.

Yes sorry, build sheet/order form is what I meant. As long as you paid a down payment and have some paperwork you should be fine. One of the guys on here had his dealer try to put a markup on his order so he had to get his lawyer involved and the dealer ended up having to honor the contract. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that for you but, even if it does you should still be able to get your vehicle at the agreed upon price.
