Fuel cap removal

Got one of the nice AMG fuel caps from Ganley Mercedes in Akron. How do I get the old tether out of where it goes in the fuel door? I tried pulling with some pliers but didn’t come out right away so I quit.

UPDATE: there is a notch next to it I didn’t see due to poor lighting. I just had to slide it with some force and it came out.

majority of the caps are held on by a simple plastic collapsible barb that you simply pry out. I use a interior spoon like the second one from the left in the pic below (made out of nylon so it doesn't mar like metal) to remove these kinds of button style keepers.
