Install external MIC “OEM” like for Android head unit

One major drawback with my newly installed Android head unit is the built-in mic located at the back of the screen is literally junk. You turn the MIC gain too high so you don’t sound muffled it picks up too much ambient noises and you’d sound very distant. MIC gain too low and your party can’t hear you.

since there were empty “grills” in the overhead console, I decided to open it up to see what I can do to embed an external mic in there. One of the slots was taken for the SOS speaker/mic purpose.

Turned out MB must have had “future-proofed” the console, but you will need to do a bit of Macgyver action and you should have no problem getting this done.

You can tape the mic casing in the empty space towards the rear. I did drill a big hole originally trying to see the if the entire mic would fit in there - it wouldn’t. But then I discovered there is actually a pre-allocated path to put the mic towards the front. Just need to pry the front of the after mic apart with your nail.

You can see the mic is secured once you lay the circuit board down. A plastic peg supposed to go though the hole in the pic. So you will need to shave it down.

Need to dremel this peg down. And drill a small hole in the back to let the wiring out.
