Right rear suspension losing air
Vehicle is experiencing a recurring issue with the right rear air suspension losing pressure after rising. The corner visibly sags after driving or sitting for a short period. Occasionally, a “Suspension Malfunction” warning appears on the dash after the vehicle has tried to air up that corner multiple times.
Actions Taken So Far:
Replaced the valve block (solenoid manifold) — a known common failure point — but issue persists.
Diagnostic Testing with Autel Maxisys Elite II Pro with J2534:
Used the Autel tool to manually command the right rear suspension valve to close. I’m assuming this to mean I’m controlling the right rear valve in the valve block.
When the valve is commanded closed:
The air spring holds pressure and does not lose height over time. I confirm this by sticking 3 fingers in between the top of the tire and the fender. Whenever I exit this function in the Autel tool I feel the right rear dropping and when I put my finger in the gap I feel it lowering. Unless there is something else I am missing that holds pressure in each corner. I interpret this to mean the air strut and airline are not leaking.
The system only seems to lose pressure when the valve block is supposed to be closed but may not be sealing properly. I’ve replaced this part, and I understand parts can be ordered defective but the odds of this specific issue remaining with a replacement part are there but slim.
My understanding of the sequence in events when functioning properly.
Raising a Corner (Filling):
- The level sensor at a corner detects it's too low.
- ECU determines action is needed.
- Pressure sensor checked to ensure tank has sufficient air.
- ECU send command to valve block
- Main fill valve (from reservoir to valve block)
- Corner valve (for the specific strut)
- Air flows into the strut.
- ECU monitors level sensor.
- Once the target ride height is achieved:
- Corner valve and supply valve close.
Lowering a Corner (Venting):
- The level sensor detects a corner is too high.
- ECU commands:
- Corner valve to open
- Exhaust valve (vent) to open
- Air exits the strut through the valve block to atmosphere.
- ECU closes valves when target height is reached.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
