Had this terrible rattle / vibration from the overhead panel and fixed it good so wanted to share. 2021 GLC43 barely 28k miles 😔. Noticed noise was coming from the side closer toward windshield, and the rattle would happen when driving slow (less than 40mph ) on the ribbed concrete roadways we have here in Texas..
So first got the clips loose to bring it down. If you look at the pictures there's a clip where the red arrow is drawn. There's one on each side, and they're both connected by the black surface link highlighted in blue.. So they move in unison. The whole mechanism is on a spring (very stiff on my panel). You can get a screw driver or metal pry tool to push in the middle where the ribbed areas are at an angle towards the windshield and that will make the clips retract slightly. Do this while pulling down on the panel to get it lose. Once the clips are out the panel will swing down on its hinge.
I think the issue was that pins that make up the hinge sit too loose inside the sockets of the overhead frame. This was making noise in certain frequencies, so I wrapped the pins with layers of electrical tape to make it snug when they sit in the shoulder slots. Additionally I noticed one area in the middle, that may or may not been an issue which would cause some noise if poked around enough, so I stuffed a small piece of shop towel (paper towel essentially) to cushion that area and block the wobble. The result was a 100% fix for the rattle noise. Pretty happy!
I also had this issue on my 2020 43, but my fix was way more crude. I just bought some 1" foam tape and shoved it in every nook and cranny I could find. I'm still shocked five years later at how much my $70k car rattled - it's flat-out unacceptable at that price point. But hey, it's been quiet ever since.
Take a look at your local drug store and go to the foot car aisle, Look for something called "Moleskin". This comes in a peel and stick. You can put it anywhere and when compressed, doesn't flatten over time, so it retains it's resiliency.
