I avoid all these connectivity problems with my Tekonsha RF, their top-of-the-line wireless controller. I originally used the factory wiring on my W164, then switched to the RF. It seems to work better, especially at low speeds, like gas stations.

I used it in our W166 (which I also added the pigtail to the factory wiring in case I wanted to pull a friend's RV).

I haven't pulled our RV with the V167 yet, but I haven't experienced any of the "problems" in RF pairing reported by others.Tekonsha engineers are readily available - knowledgeable and helpful.

The unit briefly turned on for 2-3 seconds when I connected the trailer's 7-way connector to the Echo but went offline again.

Did you had to install any fuse or anything at that #436 spot? Mine looked identical to yours (without any fuse).
Sorry did not see your post till now. I did not have a problem with the parking brake, I said the power to the red wire for the trailer brakes does not activate without a trailer connected. I put a fuse in but I don't think it was for that - my guess is that it is for the electric retracting trailer hitch on European models.
