General Cost to Maintain GLE 350

As the title says, I’m looking to gain some insight on the general costs for maintaining a used GLE 350. I’ve been pondering on the idea of purchasing one but I’ve heard so many horror stories about the cost of maintenance for any MB let alone an SUV which to my knowledge are a little more expensive than standard sedans to maintain.

I’m looking to get a 16 or 17 model and will be upgrading from a Hyundai Sonata. The costs to maintain my Sonata have been very minimal so I’m concerned I’m going to be in for a rude awakening if upgrading.

This week I plan to call a few dealers in my area to get some quotes on the A and B services but again, I’m trying to see what the real MB owners are seeing in their neck of the woods.

Thoughts?

This might give you an idea. We bought a 14 ML350 CPO in Aug 2016. A unicorn in that it was 2 wheel drive with ventilated seats. The selling dealer's internal invoice was $1,883 for CPO expenses which included 2 new tires and and evap cleaning. Miles were 31,000. Since then:
B - 8/14/17 - $760.96 - 37k
A - 7/19/18 - $254.93 - 43k
State Insp - 8/14/18 - $25.50 - 44k
2 year CPO warranty extension - 1/15/19 - $2,550.00 - 47k
Tires - 4/29/19 - $905.00 (buy 3 get 1 free) - 49k
B - 7/15/19 - $691.90 - 50k
Battery - 10/8/19 - $211.89 ($150.00 off coupon) - 52k
Today's mileage is 56k.
I make no excuses for spending this money. This is my wife's car. She still works at age 70 and commutes in it. I was a DIY'er for years. At age 60 I made her a promise to no longer go up on a roof or under a car. I'm 73 today and part of the reason I'm still alive is that promise. Last year I did however change out the power steering pump on my '67 GTO. I will say that I did not spend this kind of money on her 3 previous Infinitis. But we are 20 mins from the MB dealer. While I did not buy this car from them, I did buy a '14 GL450 CPO from them. I won't say I get preferential treatment there, but I would say no one gets better treatment.

pjw1967,

Thanks for the insight and financials on your wife’s vehicle. Those service costs you presented are certainly much higher than what I’m accustomed to paying for but that’s what’s expected for owning a luxury vehicle. You mentioned that your wife had 3 previous Infiniti’s...any thoughts on the reason for switching to Mercedes? I imagine the maintenance costs were a little lower for those compared to the MB.

She had an '04 M45, an '06 M35, and a '13 M37. The low slung entering was ok, but getting out became a chore with her back. She wanted an SUV because of the seat height to bum ratio. We looked at Infinitis first. But their design was not appealing, and they were front wheel drive except for the big one. So she asked me what should she look at. I am prejudiced against FWD even when it has a rear wheel drive component. I said she could look at MB, Audi, or Porsche. At the time I had a '13 Dodge Durango R/T which was a great car. But she disliked it. Anyway, she called me to say she was bringing home a '14 ML350 CPO from the local dealer. It had ventilated seats (a must). We drove around in it, liked the CPO aspect, and went back to try to make a deal. 2.5 hours and no go. So I found the one she has in Georgetown, TX. 31k on the clock, ventilated leather seats, Distronic. Harmon Kardon, trailer hitch, and 2 WD. Original MSRP was $68,360. Had it been 4Matic, it would have been $70,860. So an expensive car 6 years ago. We did all the negos via text and email. Drove to Georgetown and were out of there in 1 hour 15 mins.
You will find very competent people on this site who do much of the routine maintenance themselves. Frankly I kinda miss it. My slightly younger brothers still do much of their own work, including brakes. But no appeal for me anymore. Good luck in your search.
