New Software Bug?

I'll start the car and back out of the garage, it's about this time XM gets a satellite lock and the radio starts playing. Both the volume control on the center console and the one on the steering wheel are inoperative and I can't adjust the volume. I've discovered if I press the one on the steering wheel to mute the radio and turn it back on after the back up camera has cleared, it works again. Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

I have not noticed that problem. I have noticed that many things do not operate as soon as I start the vehicle (an example would be voice commands). I attribute this to the many systems booting up. After 5-10 seconds everything seems to be there. Maybe this is what you are experiencing.

I noticed the same and my thought was that it is either a safety feature (you also can't do many other things while in reverse position, e.g. switch driving modes) or a system bootup delay, as WA3CUJ said

I hadn't considered the boot time of the various software modules but that makes perfect sense.

You can try to narrow things down by attempting to operate fewer systems simultaneously. Repeat the test in the original post, with the exception of shifting into reverse. Leaving the vehicle in park, see if volume controls work immediately after satellite locks on to the signal. This might need to be attempted while in the driveway, so the antenna has a clear view of the sky.

Another test can be to shift into neutral, rather than leaving the vehicle in park. It could be that shifting into reverse creates a particular operating status for vehicle systems.
