Does Carplay2air wireless connect work?

Has anyone tried the Carplay2air product on 2020 vehicles to verify that it really works? I’m interested in wireless connectivity if it’s a proven product. The distributor’s website shows compatibility only through 2019 models. I know this has been discussed here before, but was hoping there has been some recent experience.

Though I have not tried CARPLAY2air on an MY20 MB vehicle, I did want to share my recent experience with the product in an MY18 Audi.

Though the core functionality of the product is admirable, it's worth noting that there are some issues with latency that may be a dealbreaker for some. My personal perspective is that if you primarily use your iOS device as the interface, you'll probably not mind the latency issue. However, if you primarily use the vehicle's inputs and screen as the interface, the latency can be annoying.

Because of the way CarPlay is implemented, CARPLAY2air is hit on miss on some creature comforts (i.e. steering wheel controls, some gestures). This is also something you may want to consider. Again, keep in mind this experience was based in an Audi vehicle.

Besides that, I've also noticed that as the iOS (and in turn, CarPlay) continue to grow in complexity, features, etc., the solution tends to be hit or miss on performance.

The nice thing is, you can always remove the device, plug your iPhone directly in, and work around these issues. Sadly, based on my understanding of CarPlay, there will never be a perfect device not produced by a vehicle manufacturer to implement wireless CarPlay.

With the release of iOS 14 in just a few months, I personally would wait and see how the device fares after general availability, updated firmware, etc.

Apologies if this skirts a direct answer to your question. I'm awaiting delivery of a MY21 GLE and can follow up with my experience (and a more direct answer) then.

Does not work in the 2020 GLE with MBUX. Does work in my wife's 2017 GLS 450 though and worked great in my 2017 GLE43.

Are you saying this (re the 2020 GLE) because you tried it or because the seller’s website does not list beyond 2019?

I used it in my 2018 GLE43. I traded in the 2018 GLE43 for the 2020 GLE 350 and tried it. It did not work so I gave it to my wife to use in her 2017 GLS 450.

I just got this email message from the manufacturer:

We are happy to let you know that we are now in the process of completing the test of our adapter with Mercedes 2020 multimedia systems.
The test of our engineering team is still ongoing for your car.
No worries! I will let you know right away once we are done with the test.

This is great news! Would you be so kind as to post the link, or the fact that it is available if they inform you? I loved it when using it in my 2018 GLE43.

Does not work on 2020 GLE. I have one. It works in my Porsche but not in the 2020 MBUX system.

If they make on it would be cool if it could slot into the cigarette lighter port so that you can plug it in and hide it. The problem I anticipate is that it will otherwise obstruct either your wireless charger or your cup holders.

It will also depend on weather it has a regular USB or a USB-C connection. Would be nice if MB had an Apple Carplay connection in the console storage for devices like these. Since they can't seem to roll out wireless Carplay themselves...

Agree, I was annoyed that they don't. Our E-class used to have one by the cupholder and one in the armrest console. It seems they just skimped on connectivity on the GLE.

Did I miss something? Wireless CarPlay wouldn't need a USB port.

No it won’t. But the wireless transmitter does.

Ok, I was thinking it used the phones Bluetooth. Thanks for the clarification!

The phone connects to the device using Bluetooth. However, the device connects to the car using USB. On the new GLE, the USB port is the left-hand one in front of the cupholder.
