4 banger - GLE 350

Did not want this vehicle; bought it under duress during COVID because there were no 450’s available with the equipment I was looking for - specifically a heated steering wheel and ventilated seats. MB really needs to learn how to package the options the way Audi does. So I found all the options and the only that was missing was the 6 cyl. SA insisted I would be happy but I kept telling him I didn’t want my car to sound like a cheapo rental car. Took delivery on Apr 17th and finally was able to take a road trip today - and alas, the SA was right. 27.5 mpg on the highway, nice quiet ride and adequate power. Anyone have the same reaction? I really tormented myself over the decision.

Good to hear that the 4 banger can do the job. Like you I had my doubts about a 4 in a SUV.

I am perfectly happy with the 350's performance. You will find that others won't. I always say that the world would end up being a boring place if we all like exactly the same things!! I was told by dealer, or I possible read somewhere, that MB felt that 80% of the market would be satisfied with the 350 but that there would be 20% that wanted more. At one point in my life I would have been in the 20% group but not any longer. You purchased what you needed/wanted, now go and enjoy it!!! Have fun.

The 4 cyl is smoother and quieter at speed than the outgoing non-turbo 6 cyl on 2019 models.

You don’t buy the 4 cyl for deep engine sound. But it’s really good otherwise.

I had a very similar experience. My 60 year old point of reference was 4 cylinder motors belong in a Ford Pinto. Hell...even my motorcycle has a 6 cylinder motor!
After 5 months of ownership the 350 has been a pleasant surprise. The cost of premium fuel is easily offset by the great mileage I get and it has all the power I need.

You know what they say, the belt buckle cant be too big , neither can the tires. But as you get older they become more uncomfortable . 4 cylinder fits that Also spark plug replacement a lot cheaper

It's weird that so large markets (like the US, Australia, UK etc) have so limited packages. Maybe not limited, but weirdly put together imo. In Scandinavia we can get almost all options individually, except for ie Massage seats with AMG interior, heated steering wheel with AMG interior (Was possible on my GLE, but not my mothers B-class. What annoys me is that I can't get E-abc on the hybrid.

Also happy with the 4-banger diesel, partnered with the 120hp electric engine. If I had to point out one specific thing I'm not satisfied with, it has to be that it needs much more noise insulation. Hope they did something with it on the 21 models.

Enjoy your wonderful car!
