Well, neither one is actually an AMG, so I say 580

Since this thread is about the 53 and 580, lets talk about something that has only been touched on in one entry (#25), resale value. Which do you think will hold a better value? Probably not a big difference but I see the 580 being a little better since it will be V8 (Americans love V8s), smoother riding/driving (but most will never test drive different ones in the resale market to see a difference), and it appears to be a little more of a niche vehicle.
Anyone have another input?

The AMG Badge-has value to many shoppers per my very experienced Mercedes SA...kind of like the overpriced Porsche that he also sells.
Handling-for some since there is no E-ABC for the 580 vs AMG Active Ride Control on the 53.
Fuel economy-will be a factor for some vs power for others.
Colors and how the vehicle is optioned-will be another factor.
Selling in a year or two vs 6 years will be a factor.
Let’s be honest here....the cheapest, least optioned Mercedes will hold its value best. At resale Book Values discount the options a bunch and some aren’t even added to value. A base GLE 350 with few options will hold its value far better than a GLE 63S. IMO, buy what you like but expect depreciation to be a big number on a luxury vehicle.

19 E63s(wifeys) & a 21 GLE580
I spent a lot of time going back and forth between the two and chose the GLE 53 for the better handling, exterior look (grill) and the better interior options.

I don’t think the 580 will be some collector car later and therefore only lose half as much as a 53 but like @hyperion667 said, AMGs seem to drop like rocks. I guess I’m trying to justify my 580 after seeing how the new 53 looks. WOW! The 53 is stunning.

I see your point, but if we use percentages, wouldn’t the 63 vs 350 (and in between) be very similar?

My AMG 53 will depreciate a lot more than a base AMG 53 because it’s well optioned and options depreciate much faster than the base vehicle. The same will hold true for a 580. You could look at the lease factors to see how Mercedes calculates residuals for another view. NADA & Kelley book values discount options in a higher percentage than the base vehicle and as I said some options are not valued at all. Some options are dropped as much as 50% in one year. There has been a different approach by both in the past...we used to joke that Dealers used NADA to value trades & Kelley to sell. Some dealers use other methods but mark up used to allow a cushion for trades.
Demand/Supply will be a factor at the time of sale. I got a good price for my 450 because the current shortage allows the Dealer to charge closer to MSRP. Then you also have “Large car markets” with lots of competition normally have lower prices.
The reason the AMG “drops like a rock” may have more to do with the high starting price and the fact that it’s loaded with extras that are not priced well as used. The used car consumer probably isn’t interested in a high priced vehicle unless there is a substantial discount to new. That’s why holding a Luxury car for a longer time period is a better financial decision than getting a new one every 2-3 years. Comparing % change will be similar on both but could vary a point or two but time will tell. I doubt that there will be much difference between the two if they are optioned exactly the same but that isn’t likely to happen very often, IMO.

I just get the car I want and figure I'm taking a hit either way. Cars are depreciating assets as far as what I am driving. More important for me and my wife to like what we are driving so we will take the 580 over the 53 everyday. For a AMG experience I will be ordering a 2021 E63S for myself. When my wife wants to take it she can, I am more than happy to drive the 580.

I was torn on the 53 vs 580, was leaning towards the 53 because of the better Nappa leather and active suspension options (ABC no longer available on 580). But when we test drove the 580 on 22" wheels and performance tires, I was pleasantly surprised with the great handling and engine so we ordered one.
The two styles of grill come down to a personal choice; my wife prefers the diamond style on the 580 and since it's her car, she will be happy.
Both fine cars, really can't go wrong either way!

That may be correct but my build allowed adding a heated wheel without removing the AMG steering wheel or the controls for Track Pace & customized functions. This was my SA using Netstar & not the Online Configurator. I don’t think anyone currently has solid information unless they show up one way or the other. Did Mercedes make a mistake or did they add a heated AMG Steering Wheel?
I wasn't able to order a heated wheel with the Dynamic Plus Package.

So @Ron.s now that your AMG53 has shown up, did it arrive arrive with a heated wheel, along with the Red Calipers?

I think numbers from brochure put aside, 53 will accelerate closer to 450 than 580, especially down low as you will feel power(torque) of 580 much lower in RPM band than in 53. Where 53 will shine over 580 is in handling (IMHO an important factor in any top heavy car for anyone who enjoys driving rather just getting from point A to B) and in stopping when equipped (as it should) with optional 63 brakes.
I bought a 2023 GLE53. imo I wish I bought the 580. Almost similar money, i think I'd prefer the V8 over the i6

@TTV8M Any elaboration, updated perspective you might have to share in the intervening six months since your post? I've narrowed down my search for a MY19 X5 family DD replacement to the MY25 GLE53 or the GLE580. With ARC returning to the GLE53 in MY25, hoping I can morph it into a comfortable, well-mannered ride for my wife... while being enough of a driving enthusiast vehicle to satisfy E63-owner me. Thanks in advance for any thoughts you'd care to share.
I still stand with the 580 over the 53. Of course, depending on current price comparison and depending on what is important to you such as: inline 6 vs v8, fuel efficiency, HP, etc.

When I bought my 2023 GLE53 new for $89k, I could have gotten a 2021 GLE63S with 20k odometer for the same/similar money.
