Smile Map Update Thread

Instead of having one thread per map update, it would be nice to have one thread for all the map update history, so I edited the original thread to show this.

As of 2020-11-16, the map version 322 is available (in the US).
I just checked the Mercedes Me website and happen to see that the a new map is available (322). My current version is 304.
No email notification for me about this (or previous) update. Just happen to see it on the website. Downloading it now

I received an email today about he update. Not sure if they email certain regions at different times?

I just tried logging in and the website appears to be down, getting error messages when I try to access my car. Yup... great service Mercedes !

You will first need a USB drive (usb c drive would be the easiest if you have one and your computer has the port)
On the Mercedes Me website, select "Online Map Update", "Manual Update", and select all. At the bottom, there is a "Launch Download Manager" (you will need to install it the first time, link below the button).
Once its completed, disconnect it from the computer and connect it to the car USB port when the car is on. The infotainment system should detect the drive and map data and prompt you with the steps for the actual update (might take a while)

For some reason, I never get any email about the map update. I got 3 updates so far ((don't remember if I start with 272 or something else) 280, 304, 322) but receive zero email about any update.

I got a message that it was downloaded automatically. I could not find anything about it in the Mercedes Me Connect app on iPhone. Would it be found actually in the MBUX menu in the car?

It's only on PC/Mac, not the phone app, since you need to attach a USB drive. Automatic download is limited to your region. PC download gets all of North America plus voice files that are not downloaded OTA.

My profile said the maps were already updated but the voice command files needed to be manually updated.

The MBUX system is able to update one region of the map automatically over the air (Although I personally never see it happen). Maybe that happen for the region you selected?
The voice data and the rest of the region will need to be updated manually via USB.

I downloaded and installed in the vehicle all the map regions that are of interest to me, no problem. Now where are the voice data files? Are they separate or are they embedded in the map files?

This is what I see on my Mercedes Me website. It list both the map data and the voice recognition data.

The voice files are automatically downloaded along with the maps from the Mercedes Me portal.

That's what I would have figured. It does not seem that my regional automatic update has downloaded yet, so I'm downloading another region plus my home region. Easy enough to update and won't worry about the error message. By then it will be 5:00 and time to postpone unfinished work until tomorrow and start drinking.

I always download all regions. It's nice to be road-trip ready.

I used this procedure and was able to successfully update maps. I got an error message when I removed the usb drive. Is that normal? What is the procedure for disconnecting the sub drive?

I assume you mean removing the usb drive in the vehicle. I let the usb in and let the system start to reboot. When the first screen shows during the reboot process I take the usb drive out. No error message.

A safer way to remove the USB would be, to wait until the MBUX system rebooted and everything is back to normal (map is loaded correctly in the navigation), then shutdown the car and open the door. This will turn off the infotainment system. At that point, it should be safe to remove the drive.

thanks Bob. I will have to try that with the next update. I actually waited for the full reboot and then shut the car down and then removed the usb. Still got the message. I tried to reinstall the update but the system recognizes the files and says system is up to date. Someone else mentioned that he got the error message also, but it went away the next day...

Error msg disappeared the next day. Yesterday I performed two more map updates. After system rebooted, confirmed they were installed. Then shut down the vehicle and removed USB stick. Restarted vehicle and checked System -> Software Update. No error messages.

Where is the "Online Map Update" link on the Mercedes Me website? i don't see it anywhere on the page (I'm logged in). Is it under my vehicle? I tried also going to the https://mb.navigation.com/ site and all it says is to bacically go to the dealer and have them update it...
