580 oil change dilemma

I also posted this on the GLS X167 forum as the application is the same I believe.

I am about to do my first oil change before the A service. I got everything from the dealer this time and was told besides oil and filter we need a one time use screw plug. I can't see where it goes. Has anyone done an oil change and knows where this plug goes. Part number for the screw plug is 000-990-95-18. I have not drained the oil yet and think it may allow additional oil to drain from somewhere. It holds a lot of oil 9.5 litres but if I don't get all the oil out I risk overfilling with no dipstick to confirm. Also interesting that the oil filter is on the bottom of the engine and there is no dipstick. The engine is a M176 but the block, pan etc. shows A177 AMG. AMG and 177 are all over the engine and components.

Screw plug for oil change and a random red rubber cap found sitting in the bottom pan cover

Note the AMG A177 on the M176 engine . Oil filter on the bottom and no dipstick so no more oil extraction . The QR code scan only gives me a big number no description.

The dealer got back to me and admitted he thinks the screw plug is not for this application and that the oil filter may be wrong too. They are sending me another filter and we'll see what the correct parts are when it arrives in a day or 2. Further investigation on this I found that this screw plug to drain the oil was used on the 2018 and newer S560 and has since had recalls. My dealer said I am the only GLS580 they sold and service so far and we didn't get the GLE580 in Canada so they are not as familiar with the parts. I thought if you plugged in the VIN you always got the correct parts used on your vehicle.

Many MB engines/vehicles are starting to use the plastic one time use oil pan drain screw/plug.

Always use VIN when ordering parts for an MB. Option content, running changes and model year changes mean that year/make/model is insufficient information to purchase the proper parts.

Interesting to see the Porsche-style bottom mounted oil filter. Makes for a messy replacement, even if a filter housing drain screw is provided which it looks from the photo that MB hasn’t provided.

Filter dilemma solved

I determined the odd screw drain plug is not for this application. Suggest you look at the similar thread on the GLS X167 forum to get the details.
