Carplay Phone question

I'll start off by saying that I'm not totally dug into the Apple ecosystem but I do have an Iphone 12Promax as my current phone and will for a while. I get all the plusses and minuses, but when I plug in my phone, if I ask Hey mercedes to call someone it says it can't and that has to be done through the phone. Does that mean that if your Iphone is plugged into the MB that you can only use Siri to make calls? The small screen bugs me and I'm enjoying MBUX so far. The maps haven't lead me into trouble yet, but I'm sure that Google maps are more reliable. Can you totally exit Carplay without disconnecting the cable?

While CarPlay is active the phone functions of MBUX are disabled. So you have to use Siri. You can do that by doing a long press on the voice command button on the steering wheel. The Siri prompt will come over the car's speakers and then you can issue your call command. If you are not using CarPlay at all, then you should simply disable it, so you don't have to deal with it. Remove your car from the CarPlay settings on the phone and disable it in the MBUX connection manager and don't set it up again if it ever asks you if you want to setup CarPlay when you plug in your phone.

Thanks, I was hoping it would allow you to keep it plugged in and leave the carplay app and use the MBUX until you wanted carplay for any reason. Guess I have to choose.

I bought a wireless dongle for CarPlay. After awhile, I decided I didn’t like CarPlay for a number of reasons and also was very satisfied using MBUX. However, the auto wireless connect got me into the same corner you find yourself. So I disconnected the dongle and lived happily after. I have no problem making and receiving calls on my 11Plus via MBUX as long as CarPlay has no way of activating. I would think that disconnecting the iPhone more or less permanently would solve your issue, as suggested.

looks like that will be the trick. Messaging isn’t the greatest for txt but overall I am enjoying MBUX and getting used to it. I actually use the voice control more than I thought I would.

So even if your phone is not plugged in, you can long press the voice command button on the steering wheel to always bring up Siri over Bluetooth. I use Messaging to read text messages on the car's display, but I send messages via Siri. This feature is called Siri Eyes Free. Works the same whether your phone is plugged in or not.
