Smile Automatic headlights

Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this issue. I only keep my headlights on auto setting. I feel that the headlights should go on sooner than they do. I see at dusk, that most other vehicles have their headlights on while mine doesn’t. It’s a matter of safety, making your car as visible as possible, especially at dawn and dusk where this according to the National Safety Institute is when an accident is more likely to happen. I realize that I can just switch them on , however I was wondering if there is a way to adjust the sensitivity of the automatic function. I intentionally waited to see that everything was working, the lights did go on however I would have liked them to have been on about 15 minutes sooner. Thanks

If you have the daytime running lights option enabled, you should be quite visible,

I have not noticed this issue with mine and I have not found a setting to adjust the automatic sensitivity. I have my DRLs on so people can see me even if my headlights are not on yet because the DRLs are pretty bright.

Yes, they are quite visible, AND required by law. You can't turn them off.

Regarding oncoming traffic with their automatic lights on, it could be because they are driving away from the sun. As an experiment, the OP might try turning around, following those cars, to see if a direction change turns on the lights.

I pulled up the owners manual for my GLE 450 and these snips were taken from pages 127 and 130 of the owners manual. It does have a place to turn them off if you so choose and i confirmed this in my vehicle before posting. It does states that Automatic light are just an "AID" and it is still up to the driver to be responsible so that is probably why there is no adjustment. As for it being Law...that is a whole different topic since there is not a Federally mandated statue that would affect everyone nation wide. I cannot speak to where you're located but there is no such law in NC and if I wanted to run the car without them I'm perfectly legal to do this with no repercussions. I wont though because I do like the aesthetic look it gives the vehicle when they are on. a bit more readhing dont in Jan of 2021 on DLR.

They are not required by law in the US and can be turned on or off.

You're right, and I now remember that setting as I explored the menus.
I remember GM making a big ruckus about DRL's and their suit against the NHTSA, wanting them to be required.
I didn't follow that outcome and thought that GM (et.al.) must have prevailed. As I look further, clearly they didn't.
Seems odd that the Feds missed an opportunity to Nanny us further, but stranger things have happened.
Thanks!

Don't give the Feds any ideas! I'd like to hear from a Canadian owner where DRL's are required to see if this menu option is still there.

No option for turning off daytime running lights. It’s law here mandated by Transport Canada. This item is one of the things that is looked for if you import a car from the USA into Canada. The car HAS to have this feature.

I bet somewhere there's a master template with every software controlled feature that you can go through and select or disable as needed. I'd love to get my hands on that!

If there is, I hope it's easier to operate than the "kick" under the back to open the tailgate!

If you make a blood sacrifice with your shin on the trailer hitch, it works at least 50% of the time! LOL

I wish I had that option on my convertible. The only options are the FOB or the switch on the driver’s door.
