I hate rattles and squeaks, and I've had an annoying one that was transient, and coming from the headliner above the driver's side, rear passenger seat. The real annoying thing about the squeak was it would usually only happen after I pulled the car out of the garage and started driving, and then it would would go away after I drove around in the sun for 10-15 minutes and the roof warmed. On Wednesday, I took the GLE to my dealer service dept (whom I'm very happy with and recommend) for some recall work, and had them look into this rattle...thinking I'd get a could not duplicate since it's transient. To my pleasant surprise, the tech found the cause. Turns out the panoramic roof skirt panels (between the panoramic roof and headliner) had broken clips. The sides of the skirt panel are rubber and flexible, but where it attaches to the roof is hard plastic. The tech hates rattle too, so he removed the rubber side skirts and put them in the back so I could verify he fixed the issue (the replacements are on order from Deutschland). Anyway, here's a picture of the broken clips, incase anyone else is has the panoramic roof and is experiencing a similar transient squeak from the rear headliner. The red circles denote the broken clips. No clue how they were broken...must have been during installation.
