Maximum Carrying Weight Specs 2021 GLE 450

I just looked at the label on the pillar. It’s the one which tells about the max load for front and rear axles etc. On this label it states” the maximum carrying load including passengers and cargo is 950 lbs”. I was shocked as my wife’s Honda Pilot which is rated to pull 5000 lbs against 7500 lbs is rated at 1350 lbs including the passengers.
I wonder if this is 950 lbs is a mistake? The GLE is a heavier vehicle also.
My wife and I weigh 340 lbs combined so that leaves 610 lbs for cargo. Not much when you are packing to go to AZ for 5 months to our home.

Am I reading something wrong here? I live in Canada and I know the labelling is a bit different but this doesn’t change these specs though I wouldn’t think?

Your thought please. We have a lot of “stuff” we are taking since we haven’t been there for 18 months.

That seems low, although it's rare to see a GLE with over 1,200# load capacity. It varies with equipment, and it's one of the reasons I ordered without a Pano roof. Didn't help much, though - I think our payload is 1,135.

We use our SUV's for towing our 27' RV, so payload is important. We DO weigh the rig when we're loaded and hooked up. We kind of ignore the Payload and make sure we're under the GAWR (front and rear Gross Axle Weight Ratings). We're about 200# over on the GVWR but have 200# to spare on the front and 250# at the rear.
I don't want to overload the car, but I'm comfortable with looking at the axle ratings.

As an aside, most half ton pickups (1500, 150 etc.) have payloads in the low to mid teens, so you may only gain 200# of payload by going to a truck. It's their little secret. Even though they may be "rated" to tow 12,000# (SAE J2807 tow standard), their Payloads are the limiting factor.

The original press release for the GLE 450 4MATIC (Euro data) lists permitted GVW as 3,000 kg and Curb Weight as 2,220 kg, resulting in a payload of 780 kg, which is 1,720 lbs. The value you reference is on the tire specific sticker; mine says 982 lbs (21s), but the load capacity of all GLE stock tires is in the range of 2,300 - 2,600+ lbs each, so not sure where that comes from. I wouldn't be concerned about it unless you're carrying a load of tungsten.

That 1720 lb payload is for a car with no options. The GVW doesn't change, so every option eats into the payload. Whether it's a pano roof, 21 inch tires, air suspension, ventilated seats, or even a spare tire. The six cylinder engine, ISG, extra battery also probably reduce the payload.

In my case, I think my car weighs 5150 pounds which it is quite a bit over that claimed curb weight of 4880 lbs. But that still leaves a few hundred pounds unaccounted for.

In general, I think European SUVs are conservatively rated regarding payload. That's why I pay more attention to axle ratings then overall payload.

The figures I posted were for the 450 4MATIC, but I agree that most US cars weigh quite a bit more than that due to level of options.
