Soft-Close Door Lawsuit
Full story HERE.
I got the soft-close feature based on several favorable comments here and have been pleasantly surprised about how much I like it. I'm kind of at a loss as to how this accident could have happened but plan on doing some experiments with my door (and a carrot?) to figure out what mistake not to make.

Basically make sure that every part of your body is fully outside of the car before closing the door. Also if you are leaning on the car, make sure the door is fully closed before leaning on it. I personally like the soft close doors and I never had that issue happen. Also I remember seeing a lot of tiktoks about people trying this with Tesla's door handles on the Model S.
I feel bad for the that chief deputy. I haven't realized how much I use my thumbs until reading the article.

Like the similar BMW lawsuit from years ago, don't expect much to be done.

"The judge said that humans have been slamming their fingers in doors since doors were invented and the doors on BMW's vehicles are no exception."

I find the incident extremely odd. It's not described very well so it's hard to picture it in your mind. I was surprised upon further reading that he can't go to the bathroom, brush his teeth, take a shower and more. He still has 9.5 digits left. It's not like both hands got amputated. I'm sure it's all for the lawsuit. In messing around with mine the most I could see happening is getting a small fold of skin on the side of a finger or thumb pinched and you'd really have to work to make that happen. Your door has to be extremely close before the mechanism even grabs it to pull it in. Whatever happened to him must have been a one in a million accident. I don't think there is a design flaw or any negligence on MB's part - just my opinion.

W223 door handles seem to be getting complaints from owners. Haven’t heard (yet) of legal action against the manufacture.
