Extended warranty on 2021 GLE 450

I am in a Canada. The EW is different here. The GM of the dealership could not get anyone to put in an email about coverage on the MBUX system and anything to do with the 48 volt charging system. He told me I had brought up some valid points but said he could not get anyone even at top level people at head office in Toronto to even acknowledge possible omissions of some things that don’t apply to the newer vehicles as it’s old coverage.
He shook his head and said he was amazed people at all levels just kept passing it on to some one else to answer as they did not want to put anything in writing. I said to him I could be faced with a decline on equipment warranty in the new vehicles that are not covered in the existing policy? He said it’s possible that could be the case!
So, it seems at least here in Canada you could pay $4000.00 for coverage and not have coverage on these new vehicles.

Told him to go to Germany.

Battery warranty coverage
Thus the 48 Volt battery is part of the 450’s hybrid electric system. The industry standard warranty for hybrid electric components is 8yrs/100k. If Mercedes only warranties the hybrid electric components (which includes the 48 Volt battery) for only 4 yrs/50k miles, then that is only half of the industry standard…which is surprising if correct. If correct, they must not have a lot of faith in the reliability of their hybrid design, compared to other hybrid manufacturers. I would recommend you find an extended warranty that cover these components to 8 hrs/100k miles if Mercedes won’t.

I bought the EW with my 450. When my 48V system had to be replaced at 4k miles, I tried very hard to get clarification in writing as to whether it would be covered by the EW. I never got it in writing, but was told verbally it would be covered.

Here you go…I think this covers hybrid and full electric batteries. Since the 48 volt Is considered a “mild hybrid” it is probably covered in the US. Going from memory on Hybrid’s…too lazy to look it up.🥱

Well the GLE is not an electric car. I think the distinction between low-voltage and high-voltage (100V - or +) batteries is the key point. I have been unable to find out which federal regulation applies so I can see the precise language. I guess time will tell when the first replacements out of the 4-year warranty happen.
California apparently has stricter regs than the US and in 2026 will add degradation as a factor…the battery must maintain 90% capacity. In the US is it likely that all of the US has the same warranty as that required in Ca?
I can see Toban’s dilemma…different countries…different regs…hard to find answers on a very important subject. I saw one estimate of $5000-$15,000 for replacement batteries plus labor in today’s dollars. Yikes! Since battery technology is rapidly changing it might be hard to even find a replacement battery for an 8 year old vehicle.

EV battery warranty requirement
I did some checking and can’t find any regulations either other than an effective date in 2016 and some language about Plug in Hybrids…the Mercedes is labeled as a mild hybrid but is not a PHEV so wouldn’t fall into the category. The regs seem to be pieced out by Dept. with the DOT covering only the hazardous waste regs. I couldn’t find a source for the Dept assigning regs for the battery warranty.

I doubt the GLE's 48V battery falls into the same category as EVs' high-voltage battery to be considered an emissions component.

I got to the bottom of the EV battery warranty regulation - oddly enough, it's the Federal Emissions Warranty, required by the EPA. The battery is considered a major emissions component by 50-state federal standards (although, as you note, California strengthens and extends *some* of the details) — https://www.autosafety.org/wp-conten...nd-Answers.pdf. The most common coverage from manufacturers is 8 years/100,000 miles, but any EV battery is required to retain a certain amount of its original function for 8/80. While manufacturers currently don't have to extend EV coverage any longer under those rules, California is in the process of adopting stricter requirements.
