Rear Brake Replacement

When replacing the rear brakes, is it necessary to have to use a tool to have the emergency brake released? I’ve replaced brakes on my Lexus which also has an electrical emergency and simply just make sure not to engage the brake before doing the job. Is it possible to just not engage the emergency brake on Gle 350, and then be able to do the replacement?
